Alice Cazenave, a London-based photographic artist, will offer a cyanotype workshop for adults on Saturday Nov. 5, 1:30 p.m. at the Silver City Schoolhouse at 385 High Street, Silver City, Nev.

The Historic Fourth Ward School Museum is starting the year with a pre-season event on Friday, April 29th at from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM: “Introduction to Swing Dancing.” Chris Bayer will give a short presentation of the origins of Swing music, then will continue with his band “The Honky Tonk Bums,” providing live music and raising the groove on the dance floor!

VIRGINIA CITY, Nev. — The Comstock History Center Museum presents “Honest Horses: A Portrait of the Mustang in the Great Basin” featuring photographs by Paula Morin depicting an uncommon view of the significance of the wild horse to the Great Basin.

Heading into the weekend, there’s plenty of activities around the Carson City region to help the next three days breeze by. Events include an artists fair at Carson Mall, the 60th annual camel and ostrich races in Virginia City, a memorial run in Carson City, the 28th annual Oktoberfest in Gardnerville, a Veterans Resource Fair at Carson Nugget, history walks at Mormon Station Park, live comedy and more.

SPOONER LAKE, Nev. — Join a park ranger on a guided, self-driven vehicle tour through the Spooner Backcountry of Spooner Lake State Park. We’ll follow the remnants of the historic Virginia Gold Hill Water Company flumes and pipes, and discuss Comstock history as we enjoy the day driving through the scenic park backcountry.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. – Join a park ranger on a guided tour through the backcountry of Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park.

We’ll follow the remnants of the historic Virginia Gold Hill Water Company flumes and pipes, and discuss Comstock history.

Please be prepared for a day of driving through the backcountry, and some short hikes as we stop along the way.

Vehicles are provided.

Bring lunch, water, sturdy boots and sunscreen, and dress for the weather.

The tour will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 22, and will end at the same location by 4 p.m.

Chautauquan Deke DiMarzo will portray Watchman Alex Coryell: Virginia City Police Department 1873 to 1891 at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 6:30 p.m.

It seems somehow appropriate that snow was falling in Virginia City on the morning of Monday, April 16, as crews from the Nevada State Railroad Museum and Comstock Historic Center prepared the Virginia & Truckee Railroad locomotive “Dayton” for its return trip to Carson City.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. – Join a park ranger on a guided tour and learn of Tahoe’s Comstock history, when the land that now makes up the park at Spooner Lake was used to harvest wood and water to feed the mines and population of Virginia City.

SILVER CITY, Nev. — Since 2014, Silver City Arts group has hosted music, visual arts, and poetry events and programs. The group draws on the community's own rich resource of artists, artisans and musicians, and also connects with regional and statewide groups to bring programming by national and international artists and musicians. The group of volunteers’ mission is "to encourage the arts, build community, and share our unique town through free, public events." Below are a few highlights.

Do you want to learn more about Nevada’s Comstock history and what fueled all those mining operations in the late 1800s? Join Nevada State Parks for a ranger-led tour in the backcountry of Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park.

Travel up Tunnel Creek Road and view the remains of the tunnel that took two flumes through the mountain, then hike out to the Bullwheel at the top of the historic Crystal Bay Railroad and discuss logging history.

In celebration of Historic Preservation Month, the Carson City Historic Resources Commission will hold its 7th annual Historic Preservation Scavenger Hunt beginning Monday and running through May 31.

Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. This year, the theme acknowledges the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, which helps to stabilize neighborhoods and downtowns, contributes to public education, attracts investment, creates jobs, generates tax revenues, supports small business and affordable housing, and powers Nevada’s heritage tourism industry.

Happy Anniversary, Mile High Jazz Band. Every second Tuesday they play a concert at Comma Coffee, and have for fifteen years. Help them celebrate. Grab your dancing shoes and head to Carson Lanes and learn some country line dancing. Kids won’t want to miss Craft Day at the Carson City Library: all supplies are free and waiting. It’s an evening of illusion at the Brewery Arts Center. Be dazzled and help raise funds for the Carson Middle School Band Program.

TUESDAY:

Dennis Cassinelli, a Nevada historian and author, will offer a presentation on “Petroglyphs” and “The Dayton Petrified Forest” that Mark Twain wrote about in his book, Roughing It at the Thursday Night Presentations at the historic Gold Hill Hotel on Thursday, April 7.

I love Carson City. Our history is just one of the reasons, and you can learn more about it yourself today with the Parks and Recreation Easy Walk. Meet at the Capitol building at 9 a.m. and you’ll enjoy an hour of wandering down memory lane in our Historic East Side. The annual Father-Daughter Dance at Carson High is quickly approaching and ticket sales are suspended during spring break, so you’ll want to grab them today or tomorrow. If you’ve ever wondered ‘Why Should I Like Shakespeare? then the workshop this evening at the Carson Library is for you.

TUESDAY:

I’ve always loved Tuesdays and today is a good representation of what the day can offer. National Pancake Day at IHOP means a free short stack; but they are hoping you’ll donate to the Children’s Miracle Network. Jazz and Poetry take over Comma Coffee this evening; the Mile High Jazz Band can be found there every second Tuesday all year long. Get your fro-yo fix at Yogurt Beach and help raise funds for the annual Relay for Life fundraiser. A great panel of women will be at the Dayton Community Center this evening to share their experiences growing up on the Comstock.

TUESDAY:

The Carson Library offers some great activities for the kids and Craft Tuesday today is one of them. While you’re there, head across the street to Browser’s Corner Book Store to check out the holiday offerings at their craft fair. ‘Break a leg’ to the talented students of Carson High Musical Theater: their Winter Ensemble Concert is at the Community Center tonight. Jazz and poetry return to Comma Coffee: the monthly performance of the Mile High Jazz Band begins at 7:30 p.m.

TUESDAY:

The Comstock Foundation for History and Culture is launching the Comstock History Lecture Series, which includes seven themed lectures that focus on Comstock History. The location of the lectures will rotate around the communities of the Comstock: Dayton, Silver City, Gold Hill and Virginia City. Tickets to attend the lectures vary between $5 and $10, and light refreshments will be provided for a donation.

The Comstock History Center Museum in Virginia City will feature a new exhibit beginning Thursday, A Brushwork Roundup: Western Paintings and Drawings by Craig Sheppard. A native of southwestern Oklahoma and former bronco rider in Madison Square Garden, Sheppard was a prime mover in northern Nevada’s cultural community in the years following World War II.

Chautauqua performer Lisa Bommarito will present “The Extraordinary Life of Eilley Orrum Bowers” at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday August 5, at 6:30 pm.

The event is open to the public and free to attend.

The Comstock History Center Museum in Virginia City presents a new historic photo exhibit entitled, Vanishing Icons: A Look Back at Comstock Mines and Mills.
In 1980, a documentation project was undertaken on the Comstock to record the remains of historic mine and mill sites originally built throughout Virginia City, Gold Hill, Silver City and Dayton during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The exhibit features 16 large-format, black and white photographs from this project.

In the 19th century, the darker side to life in Virginia City was often overlooked; it just wasn’t proper to talk about. Even today when tales are told of Virginia City, its rich Comstock history, wooden boardwalks, mine tours, paranormal activity and even its nationally recognized special events take center stage. The Historic Fourth Ward School Museum & Archives is changing that with its May – Oct. 2015 exhibit, “Every Man Has The Right To Go To Hell In His Own Way.”

Enjoy the holidays by taking a sleigh ride around Sand Harbor at Lake Tahoe or renting snow shoes to get down to the beach. The park restaurant will be open weekends for holiday drinks and snacks. Special meal and sleigh ride packages will be available as well.

‘Before It Was a Park’ History Talk

Virginia City takes its most popular hashtag and brings it to life with Flashback Fridays Free Museum Day. Seventeen museums are located within this small historic Comstock town and on the first Friday of the month, beginning Sept. 5, all are open free.

The deadline to submit applications for Official and Signature Nevada 150 events will be 5:00 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12. Over 400 events have been held across the Silver State since Nevada Day 2013, in celebration of Nevada’s Sesquicentennial, with many more ahead. The Comstock History Center in Virginia City, in partnership with the Comstock Cemetery Foundation, is pleased to announce the opening of a new museum exhibit entitled Deathways of the Comstock Chinese.

The exhibit, which highlights the death and burial practices of the Chinese, features artifacts, photographs, video and an accurately reproduced, life-sized Chinese gravesite. The free exhibit will open to the public on Thursday, August 14, 2014 at 11 a.m.
