Carson Middle School advanced band takes top honors at Six Flags

The Carson Middle School advanced band participated in "Music in the Parks" competition at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom on Saturday, May 11 and earned top honors.

The CMS Advanced Band earned a superior rating from each of the judges. It gets even better. They also earned first place among the field of four middle school bands that competed that day. But wait, there's more!

Out of the field of 11 bands, including a high school band, your students earned the sweepstakes trophy, which means they were the best band at the entire festival!

Students win big at Northern Nevada FIRST TECH Challenge Robotics Championship

The FIRST NV organization, organized the Second Annual Northern Nevada FIRST TECH Challenge was held Saturday at Carson High School in Carson City. High school teams from Nevada, California, Oregon, and Utah competed in a full day robotics competition for two seeds to the World Festival Robotics Competition to be held in April.

Students Win Northern Nevada Chapter MathCounts Competition

A team of middle school Mathletes® from Davidson Academy of Nevada won the Northern Nevada MATHCOUNTS Chapter competition recently while the Best New School award went to Carson Valley Middle School.

The top individual was Dylan Hildebrand from Davidson Academy of Nevada. Members of the winning team are: Dylan Hildebrand, Ian Oh, Sarah MacHarg, Rinik Kumar and Coach James Marshall.

Second place team is Pine Middle School with team members; Aron Chan, Jay Babu, Evan Liu, Jonathan Baker and Coach Pam Calhoun.

For 2,600 high school students, poetry is powering up Nevada

By making the words of great poets literally come to life, more than 2,600 high school students across the state are competing to represent their county at the Eighth Annual Nevada Poetry Out Loud State Finals at Reno’s Whitney Peak Hotel, formerly CommRow, Saturday March 16, noon to 3 p.m.

A program of the Nevada Arts Council, Poetry Out Loud is a distinctive national arts education event that encourages students to learn about, memorize and finally present poetry --out loud. Nevada’s 2013 theme of “Powering Up Poetry,” is a nod to NV Energy, co-sponsor of the event.

The 2012 education PISA* rankings indicate that the USA came in at 25th for math, 14th for reading and 17th for science out of 30 countries with only three of those countries spending slightly more money per pupil than America. 46th annual Blake Jones Trout Derby north of Bishop

This year marks the 46th consecutive year that Bishop, California will celebrate the sport of trout fishing by hosting an early season derby bearing the name of legendary fisherman Blake Jones.

On Saturday, March 16th the Bishop Area Chamber of Commerce expects upwards of 1,000 anglers to participate in the contest, which is one of the state’s biggest annual single-day fishing events.

Letter: Prison steals work and jobs from struggling Nevada companies

This is a letter I sent out to Gov. Sandoval, and multiple other State Representatives. I felt that the general public should know what our prison system is doing to multiple small business owners in Carson City and Nevada. I would be very pleased if someone would bring this to light and show what our tax dollars are doing in this economy. The annual Mr. Carson High competition will be held on Friday, March 1st at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Senior boys will be competing for the crown through dancing, singing and a variety of other talents. Fast Pass tickets can be purchased for $15.

This ticket includes appetizers and choice of preferred seating. General admission tickets are $7. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the CHS finance office, Sierra Adrenaline Cheer and Tumbling, CHS cheerleaders or Mr. Carson candidates.

Carson City School District picked for federal 'Race to the Top' grant

The Carson City School District was among 16 winners of federal grant money from the The U.S. Department of Education's 2012 Race to the Top-District competition.

The Carson City School District will receive a share of the $400 million grant, around and up to $10 million, to support locally developed plans to personalize and deepen student learning, directly improve student achievement and educator effectiveness, close achievement gaps, and prepare every student to succeed in college and their careers.

"This is wonderful news for Carson City's students, teachers and parents" said Nevada Sen. Harry Reid. "As someone whose life was transformed by teachers, I understand the importance of providing all Nevadans with the opportunity to receive a quality education. The Carson High/Douglas High Rivalry Is Voted Best In Nevada; Moves Closer To National Spotlight

The Carson High School/Douglas High School Rivalry dates back decades and was voted the best in Nevada.

In the contest being held by USA Today for the best rivalry in the country, The Carson/Douglas received 86% of the vote blowing away the competition while the Moapa Valley/Virgin Valley rivalry got 11% for second place, and the Bishop Gorman/Palo Verde rivalry finished third with just 3% of the vote.

Carson High School Bowling Looks To Get Back To Championship Form

The Carson High School Bowling Team fell off of its pedestal last year for the first time in 12 years. The team, which have been champions every year since its inception in 2000-2001, lost by one pin to the Reed High School Bowling Team in early 2012.

Now, coaches Vern Barnes, Kevin Costa, and David Lethcoe are looking to get the team back up on that championship track. The Carson team has a great mixture of veterans and new faces on the roster to steer this team back into the winners circle.

Sheriff's Office Motor Unit raises money for child abuse nonprofit

The Carson City Sheriff's Office is pleased to announced that on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 10 a.m. the Sheriff's Motor Unit will donate $500 to the Carson City Chapter of the FACA (Fighters Against Child Abuse) at the gym located at 3179 Highway 50 East in Carson City.
FACA is a nationwide nonprofit 5010(c)(3) organization that aids children in the recovery of child abuse. Please check the FACA website at www.kochildabuse.com for more information on their services and specific information on what they do for children everywhere.
