CARSON CITY – The budget situation for Nevada’s universities and colleges may have worsened today as legislators voted to both cut and restore funding for higher education.

CARSON CITY — Senate Republicans gave new meaning to the legislative jargon “floor debate” today.
Several lawmakers sat on the floor outside their offices today as they talked to activists who have been camping on the Capitol lawn since yesterday night in support of new revenue.
The impromptu, hour-long debate featured a variety of popular budget topics including teacher pay, textbooks in schools, higher education tuition and taxes.

Troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol-Major Accident Investigation Team are still piecing together the seven-vehicle crash that happened on Highway 395 near Jacks Valley Road in Douglas County Monday that sent several to the hospital and shut down southbound traffic on HIghway 395 for four hours.

Amgen Tour of California officials say they should have a decision by 9 a.m. as to what they intend to do about the Stage 1 kick-off set to begin at South Lake Tahoe given that snow is expected in the Sierra through the morning.

The following activities along Carson City roadways will take place due to utility work:

• On Monday, May 16 through Wednesday, May 18, work is scheduled on Curry Street near the intersection with King Street. There will be single lane traffic with flagger control.
• On Thursday, May 19, there will be single lane traffic with flagger control on Research Way south of College Parkway.

With the arrival of spring, the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) reminds kayakers, canoe users and paddle boaters of all kinds that they are subject to the same equipment requirements and boating regulations as every other boat on the water.

Road Report as of May 6, 2011. The following information applies to the period of May 9-15:

There will be temporary lane closures due to utility work on Fairview Drive between Highway 50 East and Butti Way and on North Edmonds Drive (old Edmonds) between Highway 50 East and the intersection with Fairview Drive.

Sidewalk improvements will occur on Long Street between Molly Drive and Saliman Road. No lane closures are expected, however JAC bus stops in this area may be temporarily closed.

The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) held another successful opening of the general trout season in the eastern Sierra last weekend. Department and local officials said that although the overall number of fishing enthusiasts was down from last year, the quality of the fish caught was outstanding.

CARSON CITY — Gov. Brian Sandoval tonight highlighted an improved economic output as reason to stay the course with his proposed general fund budget.
During a televised address from the governor’s mansion,the governor highlighted a lower unemployment rate and an aggregate $440 million reduction in budget cuts that comes from revised revenue projections and federal government changes.
He used his speech as a platform for patience and optimism, refuting claims from Democrats that Nevada needs more revenue.

A Carson City man faces a felony domestic battery charge after allegedly hitting his girlfriend in the face with a cup in front of their 5-year-old daughter, grabbing the woman by the throat and preventing her their from leaving the home.

Justin Thomas Keeney, 33, was arrested Thursday, April 28, in the 900 block of Saliman Road. Bail was set at $27,500.

Hobart Reservoir, a small, high-mountain reservoir, located at an elevation of 7,600 feet in the mountains between Carson City and Lake Tahoe, will open for the 2011 fishing season on May 1.
Because of its high elevation and location, this reservoir is normally covered with ice, and surrounded by deep snow drifts, when it opens on May 1.

It will remain open to fishing through September 30.

This is a reminder that the Nevada Division of Forestry (NDF) will be conducting prescribed burns at Tunnel Creek in the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park backcountry throughout late April and into May.

The Tunnel Creek road, from State Route 28 to Tunnel Creek Station, may be closed in order to conduct the burns.
Signs will be posted throughout the area when burns are being conducted.

Nearly 100 acres will be treated in 15 separate phases.

There will be shoulder work at the intersection of 5th Street and Butti Way. However, no lane closures are expected.

Clearview Drive is closed between Edmonds Drive and Line Drive for construction on the next phase of the NDOT freeway project. Detours are marked. The road is expected to reopen by November of 2011.

CARSON CITY — Assemblyman Pat Hickey, R-Sparks, is asking other legislators to “lay your cards on the table.”
As the budget debate in Carson City roils to no discernible conclusion, Hickey is bringing 21 lawmakers, business leadersa and academics to the Legislature to talk taxes and government reform.
“This forum will help get out into the open things that have only been talked about behind closed doors,” Hickey said. “As moderator, I plan to press participants to speak openly about the ‘end game’ here this session.”

On Monday, April 18 and Tuesday, April 19, Edmonds Drive will be subject to single lane closures with flagger controlled traffic between Colorado Street and Koontz Lane, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Utility work will occur on Koontz Lane near the intersection with Edmonds Drive throughout the week. All lanes will remain open with only minor delays expected between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

There will be shoulder work at the intersection of 5th Street and Butti Way. However, no lane closures are expected.

A Carson City mother is in jail and faces felony child abuse and false imprisonment charges after she allegedly locked her child in a room and told authorities to come pick him up because she couldn't take care of the boy anymore.

Because of utility work, Edmonds Drive will be reduced to a single lane with flagger controlled traffic near the intersection of Clearview Drive, Monday, April 11 through Wednesday, April 13, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

On Thursday, April 14, southbound Edmonds Drive will be subject to single lane closures with flagger controlled traffic between Colorado Street and Clearview Drive, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

There will be shoulder work at the intersection of 5th Street and Butti Way. However, no lane closures are expected.

CARSON CITY – A two-hour review by the full Senate today of Gov. Brian Sandoval’s proposed two-year, $5.8 billion general fund budget spent a lot of time on what his spending plan could mean well into the future.

• Utility work will occur on Division Street between Robinson Street and Caroline Street on Wednesday, March 30, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be single lane closures with flaggers.
• Pothole patching will occur on Bigelow Drive south of Snyder Avenue and on Conte Drive. Minor delays are possible.
• Clearview Drive is closed between Edmonds Drive and Line Drive for construction on the next phase of the NDOT freeway project. Detours are marked. The road is expected to reopen by November of 2011.
