Carson City Sheriff's Office Lt. Brian Humphrey graduated Friday, Sept. 16, 2016 from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. The FBI National Academy is a professional course of study for U.S. and international law enforcement managers nominated by their agency heads because of demonstrated leadership qualities.

Learn how to make pinch pots and create monsters for a monster party at the last class. Students will learn how to be skillful in shaping clay with just their hands, creating three dimensional, rounded pot-form from clay.

Rich and Robin McGregor were all smiles Saturday afternoon as they opened the doors to the new Carson City Art Gallery and Pottery Studio inside the historic stage depot building located at 110 S. Curry Street in downtown Carson City.

The historic building at 110 S. Curry Street, one of the oldest existing structures in the Nevada state capital, will soon have a new resident starting Sept. 3.

People are asking about earwigs. Earwigs are easily recognized with rather alarming-looking pincers on their tail ends. These unappealing pests can devastate young vegetables, flowers, soft fruits or corn silks.

In spite of this, earwigs, believe it or not, are also beneficial. Being omnivores, they eat aphids, other insects, mites, nematodes, algae and fungi. They eat and break down organic matter, which includes dying and dead plants or ripened fruits.

Hold onto your hats, Carson City, summer has arrived with a bang. Bikes, brews, bulls and broncs are just a few of the things you’ll find on this event summary. Whether you are looking for adult fun, family fun, art, music, shopping, or something outdoorsy, look no further: Carson City and her neighboring valleys are packed full of fun.

I am not even going to attempt guessing what weather we have in store. The west side of the Sierras are notoriously unpredictable. You are much better off betting on the Kentucky Derby; and the Firkin and Fox is just the place to cheer on your favorite horse.

What a wonderful community we live in. Music, theater, hiking, biking, wining, dining, walking, TED-talking, animal loving, state governing, and so much more are available in our valley. The days are getting longer and there is so much in store for us in the coming weeks and months as we journey into summer. Take a good gander at my list of what’s going on in the Carson City area. It is always arranged chronologically by start time.

Construction of the downtown corridor of North Carson Street is now in full swing since the March 7 groundbreaking, and already changes have begun taking shape.

Wendy Calvin has been working on Mars for 12 years. She is the Science Operations Working Group Chair on a team that has been exploring the Martian landscape with the rover Opportunity.

As we are starting another year of Empty Bowls in Carson City, we wanted to take a minute and ask for help ... early on.
We are currently collecting bisquited, unglazed and undecorated handmade bowls. We are also seeking cone 6 white clay, kiln firings and other materials.

Got kids? Plenty of fun awaits. Start out at Dunkin Donuts for their Community Celebration complete with face painting and more. Love on a Leash at the Carson City Library will give them a chance to practice their reading skills with a non-judgmental furry friend. Celebrate the Asian New Year with crafts and music at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada. Take a look at the whole list for a weekend filled with activities for those young, old, and in-between.

High Sierra Swing Dance Club presents its monthly dance party Feb. 20 at the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City. At 6:30 p.m., Clay & Cullen Mitchell will teach a lesson in Beg./Intermediate Blues. Social dance is 7:30-10 p.m. Partners are not required. Last week I visited with the Desert Gardeners Club in Carson City. I asked the gardeners to give me some ideas for articles. Donna wanted to know how to grow hydrangeas in our area. Hydrangeas are beautiful plants with large deep green leaves, which sometimes provide red fall color. They have spectacular flowers that can be long lasting, even holding their beauty when dried. Some flowers are large balls. Others look like halos of lovely blooms. Some are the size of dinner plates.

Playing with mud isn’t just for little kids. At Carson City Pottery, the fun of getting your hands dirty is for adults, too.

Robin McGregor, owner of Carson City Pottery with her husband, Rich, whimsically describes working with clay as feeling like a kid again.

“I love to feel the clay in my hands,” she said. “It gives me pleasure to throw.”

Just to be clear, “throwing” is the term used by pottery artists when shaping clay. It’s something Robin McGregor has been doing for 24 years since she first put clay in her hands.

Western Nevada College has named 312 students to the Fall 2015 Dean’s List. For consideration to WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least 12 units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher. Honorees are:

Often, gardeners focus on the plants in their landscape. However, successful plants rely on healthy soils to support them; hence, the old saying “Feed the soil, not the plant.” In northern Nevada, soils are extremely variable and often challenge the gardener. Learning more about soil and about improving it, will help you develop a beautiful and productive garden or landscape.

One deserving student veteran at Western Nevada College won’t ever forget Veterans Day 2015. For the third time in a year, WNC has donated a refurbished automobile restored by students and faculty to a community member.

It is not rocket science — Colin Kaepernick is not a pocket passer. The 49ers have tried to turn him into something he is not and it has failed miserably. The organization can’t get that through their heads. Just ask Chris Ault who tried for about a week to make him stay in the pocket while at Nevada. It didn’t work and Ault saw that and subsequently told him to just “run first and pass second” mentality basically.

Carson City Pottery will be holding KIDS classes every Sunday beginning Oct. 25 to Nov. 29, from 10:00AM to 1:00PM. This is the perfect opportunity to be creative for the holidays! Day 1 we will learn how to make a mask for Dia de los Muertos or for Halloween! Day 2, 3, and 4 we will learn how to construct a mug, a box and a rattle sculpture (pictured above). Our final two days will be set aside for glazing and any finishing touches on the projects. Nicole Bommarito will be leading the class and demonstrating construction techniques.

The Dog Days of Summer have hit town, so grab your favorite four-legged friend and have fun. CASI is hosting the ‘pooch plunge’ at the Carson Aquatic Center so that your pooches can beat this late September heat. Join the Nevada Humane Society at Lake Tahoe Brewing Company for the first annual ‘Brew-paw.’ Adoptable pets, a raffle, and more await. Don’t miss out on the downtown walk Sunday following coffee and mimosas at Adele’s. The ‘wag-n-walk’ will end up at the Visitor’s Center where you will be rewarded with a special pet tag.

Mary, a reader from Gardnerville said, “I have a terrible time with earwigs, my most dreaded pest; and the sight of them makes me cringe.” Yes, earwigs do look alarming with pincers at their hind end. They even bother seasoned gardeners who normally have an attitude of “live-and-let-live.”

What better way is there to celebrate America’s birthday than to provide a life-changing gift to someone who has served our country in the U.S. Marines and Navy?

For the second time in seven months, Western Nevada College has worked with National Auto Body Council Executive Director Chuck Sulkala, State Farm Insurance Company, and the Recycled Rides project to donate a refurbished automobile to a deserving community member.

Do you have a bucket list? I’ve heard so many people tell me they have one and making pottery is pretty high up there. Come to Carson City Pottery and get your hands in clay.

We have a variety of classes available for sign up, and lots of free open studio time. Our glazes are beautiful and we would love for you to drop by and take a look at them.

Those who have never worked with clay, or have and want to do some hand building would benefit taking a hand building class with Leigh Lunt on Wednesdays from 1:30 - 4:30 pm, starting June 24th.

A wetter than average spring hasn't dented four years of drought, with fire agencies ramping up in preparation of summer fire season in the Sierra, Pine Nut Mountains and on public land throughout Nevada.

The Bureau of Land Management Carson City District, U.S. Forest Service and the Nevada Division of Forestry warn of the dangers looming this season, with temperatures climbing and tinder dry conditions on the ground and in the forests.

The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada, Project Empty Bowls Carson City and Deloitte Consulting partnered Friday for a pottery event that brought dozens of children who created and crafted more than 150 clay mugs and bowls.

Deloitte Consulting provided 10 volunteers for the event and has donated 600 pounds of clay that will be used for bowl making projects throughout the year. Friday's event brought nearly 100 children, plus their parents, grandparents and family members.

First things first. Saturday afternoon could be expecting some wet weather, so be prepared. I can’t predict what events may be affected by it, or if the rain will even show up. No worries for you wine walkers, though, downtown will be hopping: rain, shine, or blizzard. Head over to Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery and wish them a happy fourth anniversary, Jeffery will be serving up one of his signature Sangrias. St. Peter’s Episcopal Church won best wine walk stop last month and will have live music. Don’t forget to spend some time inside Westside Pour House: ARTistically INKlined pop-up gallery returns and proves that tattoo artists are first, and foremost, artists.
