Carson High School CTE launches new manufacturing technologies program

Carson High School students will soon register for next year’s classes and will now have a new choice in the schedule as CHS’s Career and Technical Education program begins offering a new manufacturing technologies course of study in the 2016-2017 school year.

CHS Culinary Arts fundraiser Thursday at Silver Oak

The Carson High School Culinary Arts program is holding a fundraiser Thursday, March 10, at Silver Oak Golf Course. A no-host bar opens at 5 p.m., and dinner is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Tickets are $50 per person and include dinner, wine, and a silent auction.

Ticket purchases can be made by contacting Penny Reynolds at Carson High School at 775-283-1771 or preynolds@carson.k12.nv.us.

Senator Square: A picture is worth a thousand words

Everyone is on a metaphorical road to another destination every single moment of every single day from sunup to sunup again, and what is done along the way leaves a lasting imprint on both the doer and the receiver.

Like Karsen Law, an unexpected winner in the SkillsUSA photo competition, the students of Carson High School are continuously coming up with the unexpected and creating memorable opportunities for not only students to participate but the Carson City community as well.

Senator Square: Senior project presentations are around the corner

Like all students of Carson High School over the past 16 years, Honors Student Tyler Warren, since his freshman year, thought about what he would be doing for his senior project, a graduation requirement for every student who hopes to receive a diploma from CHS.

Comedy Showcase with Nick Josten at the Brewery Arts Center

The International Film Weekend has returned for the third year and brings a bit of multiculturalism with it. Spend the afternoon in Marlette Hall at Western Nevada College to see what some local filmmakers have created, and then head over to the Community Center for tonight’s film ‘Cherry Blossoms.’ This is a free event and just gets bigger and better. Raising the Bar: Carson City Chamber lunch features city business development manager

As the city prepares to raise the bar by creating a new, improved, walkable and bicycle friendly downtown, it will not be business as usual for the businesses now located in the downtown core or anywhere in Carson City.

Nor will the current mindset be suitable for the vibrant new community now in the planning stages. Raising the bar on anything and everything in Carson City will be the topic of the Chamber’s February Soup’s On luncheon open to the public.

CHS senior project addresses childhood hunger with Friday bake sale fundraiser

Carson High School student Larrissa Cruzan has put her love of baking to a good cause as part of her senior project.

She's organized a bake sale this Friday at the Boys and Girls Clubs in Carson City. The purpose of the senior project and bake sale is to spread awareness and raise money for the nonprofit organization Feeding America and its efforts to end childhood hunger and address childhood nutrition in the U.S.

6th Annual CHS Safe & Sober 5k Run/Walk a Success

Thank you everyone for participating in the 6th annual Carson High Safe & Sober 5k Run/Walk. We had a great turn-out with 104 sign-ups and 88 participants. The weather was the best it’s been for the past five years – even after many inches of snow earlier in the week!

It is my pleasure to take over for Angila Golik as the new “Senator Square” column writer, which for me is right up there with winning an election, winning a game, and winning a prize in a contest all at the same time. Though I will not be reporting on cures for warts or offering advice on marriage, I will be delivering current news and upcoming events for Carson High School.

Carson tames Mustangs on the road, 59-43

The Carson High Senators won their second game against Damonte Ranch Friday night, 59-43, this time on the road in Reno.

The win keeps Carson undefeated and alone in first place atop the Sierra League boys basketball standings at 12-0. It is 10-5 overall this season.

The Senators had another slow start in the opening period, trailing Damonte Ranch 14-8 at the end of the first quarter. CHS, in fact, went into the locker room at the half behind by two points, 23-21.

Senator Square: CHS alumni to be recognized at Tuesday's basketball game

Ten years ago, a group of teachers started a little club at CHS for staff called Senator Pride. One of our projects was to expand the news to our community of all the great things happening at Carson High School.

Finalists selected in Reflections Art Contest

The top three places by category in Carson High School’s annual Reflections Art Contest have been named, and their artwork entered into state competition in Las Vegas, Carson High School Parent Teacher Student Association's Reflections co-Chair LeAnn Saarem said.

Senator Square: Honor Society holds winter blood drive; signups begin for Polar Plunge

National Honor Society is hosting its winter blood drive. It will take place on January 28 in the library from 7:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. It is open to community members.  Refreshments and a free cholesterol test is available with each donation. CHS hosts annual Reflections Art Contest

Judging for the annual PTA Reflections Art Contest held at Carson High School began Thursday and runs through today.

The nationwide event, sponsored by the national Parent Teacher Association, is now in its 47th year and strives to “support student success and serve as a valuable tool for building strong partnerships in your school community,” according to the national PTA web site at www.pta.org.

Call out: CHS Safe Grad in dire need of community backing and support to continue

Dear Carson City Community: I have been a part of the CHS Safe Grad Parent Booster for the last few years. I felt truly called to be involved in this event; the reasons stemming from my own teenage years. We are now a small and dedicated little bunch; but....if we cannot get more help, I fear that the long tradition of Safe Grad will come to an end.

Senator Square: Gearing up for the Carson High School talent show

The annual talent show is coming up at Carson High School. The event will take place 7 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Carson Community Center. Auditions for the talent show will be on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2:05 p.m. in the upstairs cafeteria at CHS. Audition applications can be picked up from room No. 243 or the office. The CHS talent show is only open to ninth through 12th graders at CHS and cash prizes are awarded. The CHS chapter of FBLA is hosting this event. This will be our last column until after the school break. Congratulations to all of our students and staff for surviving finals and finishing up this semester. This column will return on Jan. 10, 2016. I hope everyone has a restful break.

Alum Presents Refugee information
CHS alum, Kaitlin Brush (class of 2004), presented to social studies classes this past month. Her informational presentation focused on the definition of refugees, migrants, and internally displaced persons, and the current refugee crisis in the Middle East and Europe and how different European countries are working to address the growing number of refugees.

Carson High School sports medicine program provides more than just education

Caroline Gabica slid activated hand warmers into her boots, picked up a bag of footballs and followed the coach out onto the field during the playoff game between Carson and Reed high schools in November. Soon Gabica, manager for the Carson High School Senators football team, was back on the sidelines, taping up the injured fingers of a player who got tangled up with another player’s face mask.

It's Your City: CHS student Taylor Weddell discusses Saturday's largest human Christmas tree event

This week's It's Your City with host Cortney Bloomer features Carson High senior Taylor Weddell who is organizing an attempt to break a world record by getting the community to rally this Saturday to create the world's largest human Christmas Tree.

Senator Square: Senior aims to be new world record holder

Senior student Taylor Weddell presents the following information about her senior project. “At Carson High, every senior participates in a Senior Project, I wanted to do something completely different and still help some kind of organization or group. I jumped at the opportunity to participate in an event that brings a community together, raises funds and breaks a world record. It was a little intimidating for sure, but I’m working closely with the Board of Directors of the Carson City Schools Foundation and learning so much in the process.

Senator Square: CHS students bring home top honors at speech and debate tourney

CHS competed at the Spanish Springs tournament last weekend for speech and debate. Twenty-one Carson High debaters competed on Friday and 16 students competed Saturday. Several students brought home top honors at this tournament which had roughly 470 entries. Competing in senior level debate for the first time Evan Cherpeski took tenth place in Public Forum speaking point.

Pie to the Rescue pies available to order at Carson High School Craft Fair

Northern Nevada Dream Center has teamed up with Carson High School's Culinary Arts program to help feed families. You can support the Culinary Arts team by letting them bake your Thanksgiving pies. You can order them Friday and Saturday at the Carson High School Craft Fair.

Senator Square: Holiday craft fair this week, plus culinary teams up for Pie to the Rescue

The Carson High School Craft Fair coming this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20 and 21. Hundreds of crafters from all over Nevada and Northern California will fill both gymnasiums and halls of CHS. All money raised from the craft fair is donated to the various student clubs and organizations at CHS. Come support this annual tradition. Santa will also be on hand for photos.
