The Carson City Library staff is excited to announce a record year for the Books Like Us: Winter Reading Challenge. Carson City patrons were challenged to read 75,000 minutes between Dec. 19, 2020, and Jan. 10, 2021.

Jacqueline Milagros Acosta-Bruno was born Nov. 17, 2002 at Washoe Medical Center in Reno, Nev., to Claudia Bruno and Hector Acosta. She has four younger brothers and sisters, all attending Carson City Schools, as well as a sibling just 18-months-old.

It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

CHS Senior Abby Golik, after being told Senior Projects, a Carson High School graduation requirement, were temporarily cancelled, decided she wanted to do a Senior Project anyway.

After a wonderfully successful reading challenge in January, the Carson City Library is starting the upcoming Books Like Us: Winter Reading Challenge earlier to accommodate more participation.

The Sertoma Coat Drive is in full operation for its fourth year of collecting and distributing clothing to the people in the community who are without warm outerwear. With 19 blue barrels in Carson Valley and 7 in Carson City, everyone who wants to donate new and gently used coats, blankets, and warm outerwear is finding a donation spot.

In addition to being available by phone and online, the Carson City Library and staff remain committed to delivering its services to the local community through a variety of avenues. While currently closed to the public, the library is completing upgrades and installations to enable vulnerable populations to continue to safely access library collections.

Join us for a new program, Girls Who Code! Gain future job skills, promote STEM interest, foster camaraderie and inspire confidence, all while learning the basics of coding!

Friends of the Carson City Library will be hosting a book sale this Saturday, Dec. 5 at Browsers Corner Book Store located at 711 E Washington St. from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. The annual Silver and Snowflakes Festival of Lights holiday celebration goes virtual on Friday. Santa Claus will arrive virtually at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada and in-person at Battle Born Harley Davidson on Saturday for pictures with families and kids of all ages. To ensure the safety and wellbeing of its patrons, the Carson City Library will temporarily close starting Nov. 24, 2020, in response to the Governor’s statewide three-week pause and the elevated COVID-19 concerns especially for persons at risk.

Carson High School's NJROTC Drill and Color Guard team competed in their first ever ‘virtual’ drill competition hosted by University of North Carolina ROTC program. The various teams’ performances were captured on video and sent to the University for judging.

Carson City Library Director Tod Colegrove, PhD, will be the featured speaker at Monday's Democratic tele-luncheon. His presentation will provide a virtual tour of the library's facilities, features, courses and programs, with special emphasis upon how the the ongoing pandemic has affected hours and availability.

Reimagining learning, the Carson City Library is bringing robotics technology and engineering to Carson City middle school students in 2021. Utilizing analog and digital learning, students will build components of a bionic fish, elephant, and chameleon over the 3-day Bionics Camps designed to encourage STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) related career exploration and development.

The Carson City Library is not one to shy away from innovation and integrating technology. The latest, are four self-check kiosks installed last week designed to allow for hands-free or limited touch operation to help to curb the number of touches taking place, especially as pandemic concerns continue and the focus remains on keeping the community safe.

Be a part of bringing hope by voting on contestant art pieces to decide the “Social Media Fave” in the Donor Network West annual art contest. Four Carson High students, Anthony Larry, Connor Lampert, Danielle Van Dusen, and Sarai Jauregui Rivas made the first cut, though all of CHS Graphic Design Instructor Patricia Ababio’s students submitted entries.

Do you like to make and create? Join us for fun STEAM activities each month! This month learn how to build a rubber band guitar! We'll talk about frequency, pitch, and music as a whole.

Supplies Needed:

At least 4 rubber bands
Glue
Packing tape
Empty tissue box
Scissors
Two large craft sticks
Empty paper towel tube

Join us once a month to relax through art! Every month we will explore a different technique to use art to help de-stress. For the month of November, create a beautiful glass vase from a recycled glass bottle. The glass bottle will be provided by the library. Pick up your take home kit at the info desk. Supplies are limited; registration is required. Zoom invitations will be sent to registrants on the morning of the event.

The fourth annual Carson Valley Turkey Trot begins Friday and will be held virtually throughout the month of November. The Carson City Library is hiring three interns to assist with a series of three-day Bionics Camps to be held in 2021. Carson City high school students who are interested in assisting with Bionics Camps are encouraged to apply by Nov. 22.
