Mayor to present 2014 State of the City to Carson City Chamber of Commerce

Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell will present the State of the City address, with the theme "New Year: New Opportunities," on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, 7:30 a.m. at the Carson Nugget. The event is presented by the Carson City Chamber of Commerce.

Ribbon Cutting for the bar formerly known as Mo & Sluggos

The Carson City Chamber of Commerce will have a ribbon cutting on Thursday, Dec 5 at the former Mo & Sluggos, where the owners will unveil a new name for this popular Carson City watering hole and celebrate 80 years since the end of Prohibition.

The party begins at 4:31 p.m., the exact time that Prohibition ended 80 years ago. Tony's Taqueria will be providing free food and there will be plenty of drink specials.

The address of the bar with the secret name is 110 West Telegraph Street in downtown Carson City.

Carson Nugget feeds hundreds at 59th community Thanksgiving dinner

The 59th annual Carson Nugget community Thanksgiving dinner brought hundreds to the annual free Carson City feast, where helpings of good cheer were dished up with mountains of mashed potatoes and plenty of turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie.

New to this year's menu, the Carson Nugget joined forces with FISH (Friends in Service Helping) as a way to expand the annual holiday dinner. FISH brought with them 100 turkeys and 25 volunteers.

Health care specialists to shed light on Affordable Care Act for Carson City employers

Employers wanting to know about what to expect from the Affordable Care Act are invited to a Carson City luncheon next month hosted by the Nevada Business Group on Health.

The “Look into Your Future” luncheon on Dec. 4 will feature guest speaker Russ Sullivan, attorney and vice president of Health Care Solutions for the Associated Industries of Massachusetts, who will present an interactive session that draws upon lessons from Massachusetts’ seven-year health care reform experience. Sullivan will provide insight into how to prepare for the changes ahead.

Modern LED sign at Carson City Community Center gets high tech welcome

After 18 months of planning, a new high tech LED welcoming sign stationed in front of the Carson City Community Center was unveiled Wednesday.

The $100,000 message board not only gives a refreshing welcome as motorists drive along William Street, but provides key information about events and happenings throughout Carson City.

The Carson City Community Center is getting new signage thanks to the efforts of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce and other partners that have worked with the city to obtain much need modern signage in front of the Community Center.

As most of the city private businesses have gone to LED signage, the 50-year old sign in front of the Community Center has remained a relic. Staff had to use a ladder to change the message. Beginning Wednesday, all it will take is a computer programmer to change the messages.

Yanuck becomes Carson City Chamber Chair

Gil Yanuck has assumed the role of Carson City Chairman of the Board effective Oct. 8 following the resignation of Chairman Lisa Stirgus who resigned because of a Wells Fargo transfer to Seattle.

Mr. Yanuck represents AARP and has been a member of the board since 2010. He will serve as chair until June 30, 2014. Joyce Whitney-Silva, Chief Financial Officer of Greater Nevada Credit Union has moved up to join the Executive Committee as Secretary/Treasurer.

Carson City chamber to retire old community center sign Oct. 14

Thanks to the efforts of the Carson City Chamber under the leadership of former Chairman of the Board Stan Jones, the Carson City Community Center will receive a new state-of-the-art LED sign that is expected to be up and running by Nevada Day.

The less-than-historic old sign will come down by crane at 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 14. Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell, Chamber officials, Parks and Recreation officials and others will be in attendance.

Carson City Fall Job Fair set for Friday at community center

With two successful job fairs this year that have sent more than 100 people to work locally, the third Carson City Job Fair will be held Friday, Oct. 4, at the Carson City Community Center. There will be 45 employers on hand to talk to job seekers and to accept resumes.

Hosted by Carson City Health and Human Services, JOIN and The Carson City Chamber of Commerce, the Fall Job Fair will be open to the public from 2 to 5 p.m. it will be held in the large gym area of the community center, 851 E. William Street.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong announces fourth term run

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong will run for a fourth term as the capital city's top law enforcement officer, announcing his 2014 re-election intentions Tuesday.

In what Furlong described as three "politically quiet but challenging years," crime statistics have trended downward since the 2010 election, which is remarkable given Carson City's economic climate as it continues to deal with the effects of a deep, prolonged recession.

WNC receives $5,000 grant to assist hospitality program

A worldwide industry leader known for welcoming and accommodating guests has awarded Western Nevada College and its Carson City business partners a grant to offer hospitality certification workshops.

Hilton Worldwide has allocated a $5,000 Travel and Purpose Action Grant to WNC and key local partners - the Hampton Inn & Suites Carson City, and the Carson Valley Inn, Carson City Chamber of Commerce, and Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce. The grant will help fund a public workshop for American Hotel and Lodging Association certification on Friday, Oct. 18, at the Hampton Inn.

Leadership Institute and Children’s Museum unveil new Science Room

Third Carson City Job Fair in October aims to be the biggest yet

With two successful job fairs this year that put more than 100 people to work, planning has begun for a third one in the mix set for Friday, Oct. 4 at the Carson City Community Center.

Hosted by Carson City Health and Human Services, JOIN and The Carson City Chamber of Commerce, the Fall Job Fair will be open to the public from 2 to 5 p.m. There will be up to 50 employers at the event, all seeking the right person to fill their job openings, said Lynn Ellis, WorkForce Program Case Manager for Carson City Health and Human Services.

Western Nevada College is collaborating with local business leaders in the hospitality industry to provide training to resort, hotel and restaurant employees. The Carson City Chamber of Commerce, Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce, Carson Valley Inn, and Hampton Inn and Suites are all part of the effort.

Mayor Crowell Ribbon Cutting at Carson Mall Verizon Store

Today, at the Grand Opening of Ensignal, Inc., Verizon Wireless Premium Retailer, Mayor Bob Crowell enjoyed ribbon cutting with Verizon store manager, Stevie Ore, along with Carson City Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors and guests. This new telecommunications store is located at the north end of the Carson Mall.

Former Carson City office manager sentenced to prison after stealing company money

A 56-year-old Carson City woman was sentenced to prison Tuesday after embezzling at least $140,000 as office manager of a Carson City company formerly owned by actor Kevin Costner.

On Tuesday, District Court Judge James Wilson sentenced Barbara Jean Larson to 24 to 72 months in prison on a charge of embezzlement and 12 to 30 months on a charge related to defrauding the State of Nevada, Employment Security Division.

Designer purse fundraiser Saturday to benefit Carson City Senior Center meal program

It's going to be a very busy Saturday in Carson City with so much to do for every age group. An event women will love is the Designer Purse Sale sponsored by the Carson City Senior Citizens Center between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Women can never have enough purses and this will be a way to have some incredible purses at a fraction
of the retail cost. All funds raised help provide meals for our local senior citizens. The Senior Center has served nearly 92,000 meals in their FY 2011-2012.

The senior center is located at 911 Beverly Drive.

Carson City pool to reopen for Sunday family swim

The Carson City outdoor pool will be open for families to cool off on Sunday afternoons through summer. The pool had been closed Sundays for several seasons because of budget cuts.

Sunday's will have special rates and special themes to attract the entire family. With the many young families in Carson City, parks and recreation has decided to reopen the pool. Hours will be from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Livermore legislation signed by Gov. Sandoval to preserve Nevada State Prison for tourism

Assemblyman Pete Livermore, Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell and members of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society assembled late Tuesday afternoon to witness Gov. Brian Sandoval sign off on the recommendation to study the feasibility of turning the historic prison into a visitor's museum/attraction.

Carson City Chamber poses questions in survey for residents

As part of its Dialogue 2013 series, the Chamber is reaching out to locals who live, work, play, and learn in Carson City via SurveyMonkey.

After meeting with the Leadership Institute Class of 2013, students at WNC, Chamber members, teenagers at the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada and the senior at the Senior Center, the Chamber is expanding its reach to allow residents to respond to two simple questions: Why do we live here and what do we see that our city will be like by the year 2020.

February job fair lands work for 43; next Carson City employer and jobseeker event is June 14

A Carson City job fair held in February resulted in 43 people being hired, the city's workforce case manager reports.

"We felt it was a huge success with the 36 employers attending and 619 job seekers; this is more than 14 percent of the job seekers who became employed as a direct result of the job fair," said Lynn Ellis, WorkForce Program Case Manager for Carson City Health and Human Services.

Ellis gleaned the statistics after taking a survey of employers six week after the Feb. 22 job fair held at the Carson City Senior Center.

Carson City Chamber announces 2013-14 board of directors

Carson City Chamber of Commerce Chairman of the Board Stan Jones is pleased to announce the 2013-14 Board of Directors and Officers.

Re-elected to a second three year term are Curt Spradley, owner, Carson Coffee and Carol Swanson, District Sales for Mary Kay.

Bob Tote, general manager of Costco Carson City, is new to the board and will serve a three-year term.

Gordon Gagnon, co-owner REDCO, and Joyce Whitney-Silva, COO of Greater Nevada Credit Union, have been selected to serve their first three year term advancing from a one-year Chairman’s pick slot.
