Public Planning Meeting for the Devolopment of South Carson Street

The public is invited to participate in a public planning meeting on the South Carson Street corridor between Fifth Street and Appion Way to identify potential transportation priorities. The meeting will include a brief presentation and on the changing traffic conditions along South Carson Street and public planning activities. The public is encouraged to use this opportunity to provide input on the development of the South Carson Street corridor.

New animal shelter on pace for October completion

Construction of the new Carson City Animal Services shelter at the corner of Airport Road and Butti Way is progressing, said Carson City Public Works Director Darren Shulz, with completion scheduled for early October.

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of July 11-17, 2016. Beginning Sunday overnight lane closures will take place on South Carson Street south of Fairview Drive as the Nevada Department of Transportation begins a project to resurface and improve the road.

Second suspect in Carson City auto parts store robbery in custody

The second suspect in an armed robbery Monday night of an O’Reilly auto parts store on North Carson Street was arrested Friday in Reno, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Jermaine Jordan, 31, turned himself into Washoe County Sheriff’s Office on a robbery with use of deadly weapon warrant issued out of Carson City Justice Court alleging his involvement in the auto parts store robbery.

Catmandu feline adoption nonprofit in crisis, director asks community for financial help

Catmandu has closed the gates and is not taking in any more cats or kittens at this time. Unless Carson City and the surrounding communities open their wallets and start providing support, the facility will likely not re-open.

Bear activity seen in south Carson City near Fuji Park

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department would like to advise all visitors of a reported sighting of a sow bear with cubs. Carson City staff spotted the bears in the Clear Creek area across from Vista Grande Boulevard west of Fuji Park. We would like to warn park visitors that bears might be attracted to the park because of food and trash.

Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation to hold annual meeting

The Foundation for Carson City Parks & Recreation will have its first annual meeting on Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at the offices of the Parks and Recreation Department, 3303 Butti Way, Bldg. 9, Carson City. The election of board members for vacant positions will be among topics on the agenda. A meeting of the Board will immediately follow the annual meeting.

Radio towers no longer in Carson City skyline

The radio transmission towers located near the Carson City Public Works on Butti Way and Fairview Drive were demolished Friday as the city reclaims the land for unspecified future use. The pair of towers, built in 1954, stood 220 feet high and will be replaced by a single tower. The new tower will be relocated about 100 yards west of the current location to an adjacent property, a spokesperson for the radio station said.

Spinouts, crashes and power outages reported during morning Carson City commute

UPDATE 11:15AM: Carson City is experiencing minor, localized flooding, according to the city's Facebook page. Sandbags are available at Public Works Corporate Yard on Butti Way. Call 887-2355 if you need more information. As of 11:15 there were 14 NV Energy outages in Carson City with 253 customers without power. Douglas County has 16 outages with 165 customers without power. There is one outage in Lyon County with one customer without power.

Carson City, Northern Nevada Christmas tree recycling locations

What can you do with your Christmas tree once the decorations come down? Carson City is offering Christmas tree recycling in cooperation with Capital Sanitation and Waste Management Inc.
As in previous years, Christmas trees can be placed curbside on your regular trash collection day beginning Jan. 4 or taken to one of the drop-off locations.

Carson City area road report for the week of Dec. 21-27

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Dec. 21-27, 2015: The Nevada Department of Transportation will continue work on the construction of an auxiliary lane on southbound I-580 from the Eastlake Boulevard interchange to the N. Carson Street off-ramp. There will be nightly lane closures from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. beginning Sunday evening through Wednesday morning.

Carson City area road report: December 14 to 20

Beginning Monday, December 14, there will be intermittent lane closures on Carson Street throughout the week due to utility work as part of the Downtown Carson project.  In addition, Third Street will be temporarily closed to through traffic between Carson and Curry Streets for a brief time period.  Detours will be signed.

Nevada Humane Society will join the ASPCA, The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and Subaru of America, Inc. for the annual year-end Subaru Share the Love event and celebration. As part of this national effort, Nevada Humane Society and Michael Hohl Subaru have teamed up to create offsite adoptions at the Carson City dealership on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Nevada Humane Society recognizes everyday heroes of homeless pets

Some nights I just need to unwind and I do so by watching mindless TV. While watching “Supergirl” (yes, I am ashamed), I began to think about who the everyday heroes are in life. Every day there are people who silently, without fanfare, perform acts of heroism. While they do not zap bad guys with laser eyes or lift multi-ton girders from innocent victims, Nevada Humane Society heroes are the thousands of adopters and volunteers who give so much to help homeless pets.

Nevada Humane Society volunteer program launches Saturday in Carson City

Volunteers. They’re a cornerstone to our involvement in the community, allowing us to save even more lives and bring people and pets together. Volunteers provide support at the shelter and at numerous events, assist with administrative work, walk dogs and much, much more — such as the volunteer who went above and beyond to save a litter of three kittens who were stuck in a drain pipe near the southern end of Carson City.

Draft of Carson City Arts and Culture Master Plan now available for review

The Carson City Cultural Commission has been working with Ms. Kendall Hardin, Idea Factory to develop an Arts and Culture Master Plan for Carson City.

This plan was an outgrowth from the Commission’s public workshop that occurred last month with Ms. Hardin. During this workshop, the Commission was able to reach a general consensus on the policies, content, and overall direction of the Master Plan. Many of the ideas generated at the workshop have been incorporated into the DRAFT Arts and Culture Master Plan being released Tuesday by Carson City.

VIDEO: Carson City officially breaks ground on new Animal Services shelter

It's official now and it was made possible by the citizens of Carson City and a community of caring volunteers. Carson City broke ground Wednesday on its Animal Services facility with plenty of praise, rounds of applause and a sincere thank you from the Carson Animal Service Initiatives, also known as CASI, whose volunteers spent thousands of hours to make the shelter a reality.
