CARSON CITY — July economic figures show a gain of more than 9,500 jobs for the month, adding to the overall job growth increase of nearly 46,000 jobs this year or 3.4 percent growth, according to figures released Wednesday by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval was married to Lauralyn McCarthy Saturday evening at Lake Tahoe, according to a statement released by the Office of the Governor.

PAMPLONA, SPAIN — Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval joined the President Uxue Barkos of the Historic Community of Navarre on Wednesday to sign a memo of understanding between the state and the province on collaboration in economic development. CARSON CITY — Governor Brian Sandoval announced Thursday he has appointed Paul Nicks as Acting Director of the Governor’s Finance Office. Nicks will replace Jim Wells, who is retiring from state service on July 13.

Health and Social Services (HSS) has been the fastest-growing category of state expenditures since Fiscal Year 2010 (FY10). Nevada spent $5.5 billion on these services in FY17, up from $2.2 billion in FY06.

Much of this spending is financed through federal grants for Medicaid, food stamps and other welfare programs. As Nevada spends money on these programs, it gets some reimbursement from the federal government. However, the reimbursements do not compensate Nevada fully for all expenditures, and certain programs such as Medicaid require a matching state commitment.

Three staff members from the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development have been promoted, Executive Director Paul Anderson announced Wednesday. The staffers are Matthew Moore, Melanie Sheldon and Mariah Heriman.

Unemployment in Carson City continued to decrease in May to 4.2 percent, down 0.7 from a year ago and the lowest it has been since October 2006, according to figures released Tuesday by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
