As we head into the final Monday of 2019, we're looking at a slight chance of light snow in the morning as a weak weather system brushes the region. Events around the Carson City area include a driver's education class offered through Western Nevada College Continuing Education, a luncheon featuring Patricia Ackerman, a Democratic primary candidate for Nevada's 2nd Congressional District, art activities and more.

The Carson City Historical Society Board held an emergency meeting on Dec. 21 to discuss the eminent demolition of Adele’s, and strategized on how this historic building could be preserved.

The board voted to pursue a fund raising campaign to work with the community to preserve the 155 year-old Adele’s building at 1112 North Carson Street, Carson City, Nev.

We celebrate our community for its many, many charitable functions and its generosity in the spirit of Christmas and giving. The whole audience will be bouncing and swaying to the irresistible rhythm. Everybody singing HI-DE-HO! They’re echoing the King himself, Cab Calloway, as he thrusts his baton into the air, and in his Zoot Suit, jumps, twirls and signals to the band to begin another joyous chorus. Who could forget the incredible sounds and imagery of Cab Calloway and his hot Jazz Orchestra!

Heading into Christmas Eve, activities around the capital city are winding down, but the last minute shopping will continue, so prepare for that rush on the roadways and at local stores. It is the last day of the Holiday Craft Show at Carson Mall, so stop on by. There are no planned Muscle Powered fitness events scheduled. Christmas Eve church services are at First Presbyterian Church in Carson City and other places of worship around town. Here's what's ahead Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2019.

Heading into Monday, it sure does feel like Christmas around the capital City. With only two shopping days left until Christmas be sure stop by the Carson Mall for the final days of its Holiday Craft Show. Weather wise we're looking at some valley snow showers into the afternoon and evening. Activities include a spirited discussion by local historian CW Bayer about the origins of Reno's tawdry reputation, plus Carson Cigar Company will hold its annual Ugly Sweater Christmas Party. For the first time, the Brewery Arts Center has organized Carson City’s "Unsilent Night." An original composition by Phil Kline, "Unsilent Night" was written specifically to be heard outdoors in the month of December. It takes the form of a street promenade in which the audience becomes the performer.

Today, the Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation named Carson City, Nevada as one of 20 small to mid-sized towns and cities across America to win a Levitt AMP Grant Award of $25K in matching funds to present a free concert series at The Change Companies Stage. The Brewery Arts Center submitted Carson City’s Levitt AMP proposal.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include a toy and gift drive for homeless kids and teens, the 12th annual Christmas Carol Playalong for Strings at the Carson Mall, Carson City’s first-ever "Unsilent Night" at the Brewery Arts Center, a Só Sol dinner with entertainment at Sassafras, a "Pink Party" cancer center fundraiser at the Lighthouse Bar, comedian Dan St. Paul at the Carson Comedy Club and more.

The spirit of Christmas is in the air as we head into the final stretch of the work week. Thursday events around the capital city feature an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered, a Carson City tradition with the return of Joyful Noise Holiday Community Show at the Brewery Arts Center and more.

Clouds will roll into the capital city region Tuesday keeping temperatures quite chilly. Happenings around town include organized morning and evening fitness walks, a "Stuff the Bus Toy Drive" at Capital Ford, a Planning Commission meeting on the proposed Andersen Ranch development and a Posada event at Mark Twain Elementary. Plus, the Carson City School Orchestra Program will hold its annual Holiday Concert at the community center, The Peanuts Gang Trio will hold a free holiday concert at Sassafras, and more.

The countdown to Christmas is on as we head into the first day of the work week. Events around the capital city Monday include a free yoga class offered through Partnership Carson City, the first day kickoff of a Holiday Gift Making Camp at the Brewery Arts Center, a Carson River Trails Project open house hosted by Parks, Recreation and Open Space, a Carson City Democratic luncheon featuring a Bernie Sanders campaign presentation, West Coast swing dancing at Carson Lanes and more.

It’s a holly, jolly Christmas! Cherie Shipley and Lake Tahoe Entertainment present the 18th Annual Community Holiday Show "Joyful Noise" this Thursday, Dec. 19 at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City.

Join local musician Kingwhistler and other local favorites for "Holiday Homeward with Kingwhistler and friends," a concert to celebrate the season.

Kingwhistler will be joined by Jenera Paxton and Josh Procaccini, and other guest musicians include Keith Alan Barnett, Craig Logan, Ross Wylde and Ten Dollar Pony.

Come to Brewery Art Center’s Performance Hall on January 25, 2020 to experience Loud As Folk, hosted by Spike McGuire. This is one night only, and the showcase will be feature performances by Whitney Myer, Jelly Bread’s Dave and Cliff, Mel and Gia, and Tyler Stafford. Be sure to grab your tickets so you don’t miss out.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the KTVN Share Your Christmas Food Drive at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City and at Minden's Carson Valley Inn, Homestead Holidays at the Silver Saddle Ranch and more. The Polar Express Train Rides are sold out for the rest of the year, but Santa Train express rides are steaming up at the Nevada State Railroad Museum over the weekend. Read on for details.

With activities lining up around the capital city through the weekend, Thursday events around the region include a meeting of the Healthy Communities Coalition in Silver Springs, an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered, and a Carson City CASA volunteer information hour and training seminar. Along the music front, CHS Band will host its winter concert at the Carson City Community Center and our own local country music star and Nashville recording artist Art Mulcahy will be at Jimmy G's. Enjoying the mix of sunshine, clouds and the overall late fall conditions around the capital city? More of the same is expected Wednesday into Thursday, with another system due in time for the weekend. Activities around Carson City include an educational discussion on dementia presented by the Alzheimer's Association at the Carson City Library, a moonlight walk to C-Hill, a "Get Fit with Fight Camp" at Yaple's Ballroom, art showings, a Carson Valley Community Theatre audition call for two plays, classes and more.

On Saturday, Dec. 14, Linda Ritter, artist and owner of Pinyon Pottery, will demonstrate the art of pottery making between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. bringing in her pottery wheel to the Carson City Chamber of Commerce, 1900 S. Carson Street. Many of her art pieces will be on display and for sale, just in time for the holidays.

Partly sunny skies and a daytime high in the mid-40s looks to be the order of the day around the capital city as we roll into Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019. Happenings around town include a book presentation by urban fantasy author SM Reine at the Nevada State Library and Archives, a morning fitness walk and evening hike, dance classes, a meeting of the CCSD board, plus festive December music and more with Night Lights Holiday Jazz and Poetry at Carson City's Comma Coffee. In December, Mondays don't really seem like Monday. At least for those of us caught up in the holiday spirit of giving and kindness. What a weekend of community fellowship this was among Carson City locals and we're just getting started, counting down the days until Christmas.

Jean Marie Hamilton
September 11, 1937 – December 3, 2019

Jean Hamilton passed away peacefully surrounded by family, Tuesday Dec. 3rd.
Jean married Bud Hamilton on December 22, 1956 in Lindsey, California. They moved to Carson City, Nevada in 1972. Jean always wanted to be a nurse and went to nursing school as soon as all her kids were in school. She enjoyed a 37 year career as a Registered Nurse, with the majority of it spent at Carson Tahoe Hospital. Everyone who worked with her, or were under her care, said she was truly the best nurse.

Events include the Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights, the 24th annual Parade of Lights in Gardnerville, the annual Project Empty Bowls dinner held at the Carson Mall, a Holiday Crawl in downtown Carson City and much more! The break in the stormy weather was a short one, with more precipitation later in the day Wednesday, forecasters say.
