RENO — Northern Nevadans who are uninsured, underinsured or without a social security number can receive free medical care this August and September 2019 at upcoming University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine Student Outreach Clinics.

UPDATE: There's a star party late Monday night into Tuesday morning hosted by Carson City Parks and Recreation and Open Space. For summer’s most visible meteor showers, join the Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space Department at Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory for some late night, educational fun. No pre-registration necessary. Please wear close-toed shoes and bring water for night hiking from the Observatory. Head lamps and flashlights are allowed. Heading into Monday, July 29, 2019 and we're wondering how the month went by so quickly. Again we're looking at a fairly typical end of July day weather wise, with sunny skies and a high around 94. On tap around Carson City are athletic, art and speaking events, a life guard camp, a computer coding camp, line dancing lessons and more. Enjoy.

This camp is perfect for those who love the water and are interested in learning some basic lifeguarding skills. Participants must have the ability to swim front crawl for 25 yards, swim breast stroke for 25 yards, tread water for 1 minute, and exit the pool without stairs or ladder. Junior Lifeguard Camp will be held July 29 through August 2,
1 to 4 p.m.

CARSON CITY — According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Early detection is key in the fight against breast cancer, so access to screenings is critically important.

Carson City Soroptimist will present grant awards to two women, and honor the achievements of local high school seniors, on Wednesday, May 22, noon to 1 p.m. at Glen Eagles. The meeting is open to the public, with prior reservations required.

Headed into Saturday, April 27, 2019 we're looking at another picture-perfect spring weather day and cool overnight temperatures. There's lots of activities ahead, including a colorful fun run at Mills Park, a free paper and document recycling event hosted by Debug Computer, a prescription drug roundup, the Silver State's own celebration of the Aloha State, a Carson High School speech team fundraiser at Flavors of India, art showings and sales and a fundraiser at Flat Earth Pizza for a wonderful Carson City woman who is in the throes of cancer. A 44-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Wednesday, 11:51 p.m. in the 4700 block of South Carson Street for suspicion of battery, a sheriff's deputy said.

A fundraiser for a Carson City mother who is currently battling stage 4 breast, bone and liver cancer is set for this Saturday, April 27 at Flat Earth Pizza.

The fundraiser for Mila Mangone of Carson City is from opening to closing, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the pizza restaurant, located at 2010 E William Street. Portions of the proceeds collected at the fundraiser will help Mila's treatment plan.

My wife Mila is currently battling stage IV breast, bone, and liver cancer. Last January she was given three weeks to live. Completely bedridden for nearly 10 months, the cancer in her bones broke one pelvis and cracked another, and all of the vertebrae in the back compressed and fractured, which the result was losing six inches of height.

CARSON CITY — A total of 93 Career and Technical Education (CTE) and HOSA (Future Health Professionals) students competed in the Nevada State Leadership Conference held at the Rio in Las Vegas March 18-20.

There were a total of 74 students from Carson High School (CHS), 6 from Pioneer High School (PHS) and 13 from Carson Middle School (CMS). More than 1,000 students from across the state of Nevada competed in more than 40 medical competition events.

Shelly Morales is a local woman who is currently fighting against Stage 4 breast cancer, and will be undergoing another round of chemo therapy.

Her daughter, Nikki Becker, has started a GoFundMe page to help alleviate the financial burden of Morales and her family.

Nevada Health Center's Mammovan made a stop at the the Nevada Legislature in Carson City on Monday as a part of its Northern Nevada tour and to recognize Community Health Provider Day.

The 2019 Legislative Session is in full-swing, and during week 3 we’ll see numerous, important bills, budget considerations and presentations in committees and around the legislative campus in Carson City.

A perennial measure to implement an automated system of traffic enforcement at select intersections will be heard this week. Lawmakers will hear a measure regarding collective bargaining, the New Nevada Education Funding Plan, Medicaid coverage for donor breast milk, cannabis drug screening for employment, sexual assault screening, a Working Families rally and lobbying day on Monday and much more.

Carson City Soroptimist will feature Lori Nichols as speaker during its Program Meeting on Wednesday, February 27, 12-1 p.m. at Glen Eagles Restaurant. This meeting is open to the public, with prior reservations required. There is no charge to attend, however, a plated lunch with choice of entrees, selected in advance, is available for $16.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this time every year touches the heart of one of the teachers at CHS: Art teacher Mike Malley, whose mother is a breast cancer survivor, due to early detection, has decided to take breast cancer awareness to a new level by putting on a fundraising event Oct. 18 at the Trimmer Barn from 5 to 8 p.m.

Carson Tahoe Health and Red's Old 395 Grill in Carson City partnered Monday to host their annual kick-off event, "Think Pink," a campaign for breast cancer awareness. More than $4,000 was raised last night, alone. The campaign runs throughout the month of October, in recognition of breast cancer awareness month, to encourage women to take charge of their health.
