Thursday, Dec. 3: Things to do in Carson City

What a weekend in store for us: the Silver and Snowflakes Tree Lighting, the wine walk, Holiday with a Hero crawl, and more. First things first, though, Thursday fun stuff. Bundle up and head to Gardnerville for the Christmas Kick-off at Heritage Park with Santa, a tree lighting, and fireworks if the weather cooperates. Empty Bowls is hosting a preview night at the First Presbyterian Church; for a donation of $25 or more you get first pick of the handmade bowls that members of the community have made and decorated over the past year, and that includes admission to the soup fest tomorrow.

The Polar Express takes its first trip of the season today, and I hope you got your tickets. The annual event always sells out. Check here for ticket information; you may get lucky. Take the kids to the Carson City Library for weekly story time and check out CCAI’s Industrial Art Exhibit while you’re there. Today is the last day it will be on display. Hear stories of Old Virginia City at the Gold Hill Hotel. Or take a trip to the Nevada State Museum: the bombing of a Basque village during the Spanish Civil War and the affect it had on the United States is the topic of this month’s Francis Humphry lecture.

Downtown Coin Club makes donation to Howell family; motorcycle rally on Saturday

A fundraiser by The Downtown Coin Club for the family of fallen Carson City Sheriff’s Deputy Carl Howell raised $540. The donation, along with a custom-made plaque, was presented to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office Friday.

The money was raised through the generosity of Downtown Coin customers, and matched by the Downtown Carson City Coin Club, said Downtown Coin owner Dan Wilson.

Bull riding Saturday to raise money for family of slain deputy Carl Howell

Manuel Souza is bringing back his Smackdown Bull Riding tour to Carson City on Saturday — this time as a fundraiser for Deputy Carl Howell, who was killed in the line of duty Aug. 15.

“I think it’s the right thing for us to do as people,” said Souza, who is working in cooperation with the Carson City Sheriff’s Deputy Association. “Police officers do a thankless job. But they’re always there when you need them, aren’t they? I think it’s important we do this.”

Navy sailors to perform volunteer services in Carson City

Fifteen sailors from Carrier Air Wing Three of Virginia Beach, VA will be in Carson City on Saturday, Oct. 3 and Saturday, Oct. 10 to perform volunteer work at some of our most historic sites.

The sailors will be training at Fallon Naval Air Station and when in any community perform volunteer duties to “leave each place we visit in better condition,” according to Lt. Robert D Fasnacht, group leader.

Animal lovers can also head to Carson Catalina Apartments for a rummage sale that benefits the Carson Tahoe SPCA. The Carson City Sheriff's Office young Explorers will host a fundraising car wash; The Marine Corp League can be found at the north Carson Walmart; half of the donations received will go to Deputy Howell’s family fund. And don’t miss out on the drought-friendly water balloon ice bucket challenge raising funds for ALS at Butler Meats on Sunday.

The Freaks of Nature is hosting a car show will be held at Yogurt Beach at 3228 N. Carson St. Carson City NV 89706 on the side parking lot by Valley Realty. On September 12th from 10am to 3pm. There will be a 50 / 50 raffle. The registration is $20 dollars and this is a free event for spectators.

Trophies include top 15, and special picks. There will be a BBQ for FREE provided by Yogurt Beach , bounce house and some amazing activities for the kids. Most definitely will wanna bring the kids. Registration starting at 10 am and ending at 1pm with trophies at 3pm.

An aviation air show at the Minden Airport, the coin show and fair at the Nevada State Museum, and a fishing derby for the kids at Little Washoe Lake are only the tip of the iceberg. The Pavilion at Mills Park is where you’ll find the annual Carson High Football Boosters Fundraising BBQ. The Quicksilver Dog Agility Trials are always fun to watch, and they’ll be at Fuji Park all weekend. Carson Lanes has family fun indoors and out all day long during their Bowling Blast-off.

Celebrate Prohibition-style at the Brewery Arts Center: the annual Speakeasy Swing Dance Party wants to see you in your finest zoot suit or flapper dress. Head back to the Eighties at Living the Good Life; DJ Bobby G is spinning the hits from yesteryear.

I hope you’re in the mood for music, Carson City. The annual Jazz and Beyond Festival begins today with an art show and concert on the lawn of the Bliss Mansion. Over the next two weeks you’ll have a plethora of melody to choose from at venues throughout town. Enjoy an outdoor concert at Third and Carson with Drinking with Clowns. Sassafras is thrilled to grab Groove Session for a show; they’re usually off touring. Mo’z Motley Blues will give you a reason to dance at Living the Good Life. You’ll want to take a look at the whole list: I’ve only barely scratched the surface.

Sunday, August 2: Things to do around Carson City

Sundays are a great day to hit up the Carson City Library now that it’s open seven days a week. A viewing of the movie Persepolis begins at 2 p.m. and is about a young girl during the Iran Revolution in the 1970s. Pop-up Storytime is great choice for younger patrons.

The Fair at Fuji Park and the Silver Dollar Classic at Mills Park are still going strong. While you’re at Mills Park, take a ride on the train: rides begin at noon. Genoa is a great place to spend an afternoon. This month’s Sweet Sippin Sunday features Tequila cocktails and music by Carson’s own, Janera Paxton of the Whitehats. Mozart lovers won’t want to miss TOCATTA at the Shepard in the Sky Church for their Mozart in the Mountains concert.

Silver Dollar Car Classic this weekend in Carson City, Hot August Nights in Virginia City

Classic car enthusiasts from Carson City to Virginia City will rev up their engines this weekend for two annual events: The Silver Dollar Car Classic and the Virginia City kickoff to Hot August Nights.

Festivities in Carson City begin Friday at Max Casino, formerly Carson Station, with a street dance, show and shine beginning at 6 p.m. The car show then moves to Mills Park for the weekend.
