Outdoors with Don Q: The 16th annual John Riordan Invitational Fishing Derby
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 05/01/2012 - 11:54pmThree of us (Don Hettrick, Bob “Slick” McCulloch and I) are back, safe and sound in Carson City after being contestants in the 16th annual Topaz Lake invitational fishing derby, which is sponsored by John Riordan.
That derby was held on Sunday-Monday-Tuesday, April 22-23-24, and it attracted some 70 fishermen from Nevada and California.
This year for the first time in history, the derby had a brand new fish category (bass) in addition to the regular trout category.
When the smoke and dust cleared after three days of fishing by all of the contestants, these were the 2012 winners:

Restrictions lifted for some Humboldt County waters
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Tue, 04/24/2012 - 9:15amA recent change in Nevada’s fishing regulations has relaxed hook restrictions, allowing for the use of barbed hooks on any legal bait for the Andorno Creek, Colman Creek and North Fork of Battle Creek, all in Humboldt County. Previously the regulation allowed for only the use of single barbless hooks for fishing these waters.

Outdoors with Don Q: Annual Invitational Fishing Derby at Topaz Lake
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 04/11/2012 - 6:22pmSunday through Tuesday, April 22-24, are the 2012 dates for the highly-popular John Riordan Invitational Fishing Derby. John is the Assistant General Manager for the Carson Station Hotel and Casino in Carson City, and this will be the 15th version of his annual, fun-filled, fishing event at Topaz Lake.
His derby is traditionally co-headquartered at the Topaz Lake Marina and the Topaz Lake Lodge at Topaz Lake, which lies along the Nevada-California state line about 40 miles south of Carson City.

New sportsman “Dream Tag” available

Applications must be received, either by mail or online at internet website www.huntnevada.com, by 5 p.m. on Monday, April 16, to be eligible for the computerized drawing.
Hunters will also have a unique “raffle” opportunity to win premier big game tags this year with the all new Nevada Dream Tags. The tag is similar to other western states’ raffle tags and “hunt of a life time” tags.

- The Fort Churchill Cooling Ponds, near Wabuska.
- Applicable open waters (Bass Pond, Beaver Slough, Crappie Pond, Hinkson Slough, North Pond and the Walker River), all on the Mason Valley Wildlife Management Area (MVWMA), near Yerington.
All of the waters listed above will close on Sept. 30.

Pesky bears, a roaming gray wolf, significant poaching arrests, tsunami relief work and dramatic wildlife rescues were among the stories that captured the public’s attention.
DFG also welcomed new Director Charlton H. Bonham, who was appointed by Governor Jerry Brown in August.

Topaz Lake Opener on New Years Day

How to get there:
Take U.S. 395 south from Carson City for about 40 miles.
Where to fish from shore:
Along the beach at the north end.
On the far shore, past the Douglas County campground.
On the California side, along U.S. 395.
