If cool cars are more your style, join the Freaks of Nature Car Club at a show and shine in the parking lot of Yogurt Beach in North Carson. It’s root, root, root for the home team as the WNC Wildcats play a double header at Harvey Field.

Sunday, August 30: Things to do around Carson City

Are you off to the playa? If not, head over to the Carson City Airport for their display of vintage aircraft celebrating the end of WWII. If land-based vehicles are your passion, then the Ferrari Hill Climb along the truck route to Virginia City could be for you. If the Ferraris are too fast, maybe you’d enjoy watching or racing with Carson City BMX at the Livermore Sports Complex off Edmonds Street. For something without wheels, consider the weekly pool tournament at Remedy’s on William Street.

  • Vintage aircraft to mark the end of WWII at Carson City Airport (8am–3pm; TBM Avenger flight 12pm; free)
  • Burning Man begins
  • Virginia City Ferrari Hill Climb

This last weekend of August is filled with ways to celebrate your community. Carson Animal Shelter Initiative, better known as CASI, hosts their annual Bark, Whine, and Dine Fundraiser at Fuji Park. Animal lovers can also head to Carson Catalina Apartments for a rummage sale that benefits the Carson Tahoe SPCA. The Carson City Sheriff's Office young Explorers will host a fundraising car wash; The Marine Corp League can be found at the north Carson Walmart; half of the donations received will go to Deputy Howell’s family fund. And don’t miss out on the drought-friendly water balloon ice bucket challenge raising funds for ALS at Butler Meats on Sunday.

WNC recognizes Deaf Pride Week with activities through Saturday

Carson Now reader Theresa Lynn Thornton alerted us that Deaf Pride Week is being recognized at Western Nevada College this week.
"We have two huge events coming up, one Friday in the Carson Nugget Hall (Open Hands Night, where you can watch people tell stories and sign songs) from 6-8 and Saturday, our big event, at noon for everyone to come enjoy with free pizza drinks bounce house and face painting," said Thornton. "It all benefits our deaf studies program and helps the deaf community come together."

The wine walk is on the top of the weekend to-do list for many of you, but Carson City has a lot more going on. Ascent Runs is hosting a 5/10K and a half marathon at C-Hill on Saturday. You can register at the race, just make sure you aren’t late. Youth Football season has arrived with sign-ups for SYFL and Pop Warner on Saturday. Cheer on the Western Nevada College Wildcats as their Baseball and Softball teams battle against Salt Lake City Community College.

Carson Victory Rollers holds derby Sunday to benefit Food For Thought

The Carson Victory Rollers will hold their annual Red vs. Green Scrimmage to benefit the local Food For Thought program. The event is this Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center gymnasium.

Come out and watch both the Junior Victory Rollers and adult skaters battle it out. Along with action packed skating, there will also be a raffle. Prizes include a scooter donated by the Wheelhouse, tattoo gift certificates, rounds of golf, haircuts and much more.

Every week, I create a list of the fun stuff and events going on around the Carson City area for my Facebook page, I love Carson City. I follow the pages of local businesses and organizations, search website calendars, keep my ear to the ground, and compile a list of anything and everything going on in this community.

Fundraiser for Holly

Holly is a five year old canine who was recently diagnosed with papillary squamous cell carcinoma cancer. Holly has been under the care of the Lone Mountain Veterinary Hospital and now requires a very expensive surgery.

Holly's owner, Amy Shelton, is a twenty five year old long time resident of Carson and is asking the community to help in any way they can. Amy, Holly, friends and family will hold a fundraising bake sale, Sunday, December 7th at 1:00pm in front of the Petco on Topsy Lane.

Registration open for Kinder Kup Race Series to Benefit Heavenly Foundation

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation will kick-off the 12th Annual Kinder Kup Race Series at Heavenly Mountain Resort, South Shore Lake Tahoe, on Sunday, January 22, from 8am to 2pm. Open to all skiers and snowboarders age six and under, the Kinder Kup series is designed to introduce young athletes to competition in a friendly environment. No previous race experience necessary and all abilities are welcome. Entry is $20 and includes a World Cup only competitor lift ticket if needed.

Comma Coffee to hold bake sale for victims of Japan disasters

Comma Coffee in Carson City will host a bake sale on Saturday, April 2 with proceeds to go to UNICEF's efforts to help children in the wake of the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster in Japan. Kinder Kup Ski Race Series Final Event This Sunday

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation will host the Kinder Kup Race Series finals at Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Mountain Resort on Sunday, March 20, 2011 from 8a m to 2 pm.

Open to all skiers and snowboarders age six and under (as of Dec. 31, 2010), the Kinder Kup series at Lake Tahoe is designed to introduce young athletes to competition in a friendly environment. No previous race experience necessary. Entry is $20 and includes a World Cup only competitor lift ticket.

Heavenly snowboard team hosts March 11 rail jam

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation will host the Shredtacular Rail Jam event at the American Legion in South Lake Tahoe on Friday, March 11 from 4:30 to 10 p.m.

Open to skiers and snowboarders of all ages, the Shredtacular will be held on a feature built by Rob Giustina of On Course Events. Entry is $20 and includes a goodie bag and a raffle ticket for a chance to win tons of prizes.

After spending decades helping so many here in Carson City, Vikki Hopkins finds herself on the receiving end of that help today. In September 2010 she was diagnosed with an advanced form of lung cancer. Upon hearing about it, her co-workers started spreading the word about her struggle. Almost immediately a movement began to help Vikki and her family with this struggle. The response was immediate and overwhelming. People from all over the city began to ask what they could do to help, so a benefit fundraiser was arranged.
