In observation of, October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ) continue its mission against domestic violence by celebrating its 19-year partnership with Congress in the historic passing of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).

On September 12, NCJFCJ’s Chief Executive Officer, Mari Kay Bickett, JD, joined Vice President Joseph Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, at a reception celebrating the 19th anniversary of VAWA at the Vice President’s Naval Observatory Residence in Washington, D.C.

Record number pink t-shirt participants packed Old Red's patios to support Carson Tahoe Cancer Resource Center's 12th annual THiNK PiNK campaign. Thank you Red’s Old 395 for hosting the event and everyone who participated, donated time, and resources, to help kickoff Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

RENO, NEVADA – September 30, 2013 – Today, more than one-third of U.S. adults suffer from obesity, a condition that is often accompanied by heart disease, stroke, Type 2 Diabetes, and even certain types of cancer. Considering that staggering statistic, Reno-based Western Bariatric Institute (WBI) believes it is more important than ever to raise awareness of obesity to help ensure access to effective treatment options as well as to provide education about prevention.

Carson Tahoe’s twelfth annual Think Pink campaign kicks off on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 to honor Breast Cancer Awareness month. Red’s Old 395 Grill will once again host the event from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Carson City.

The event is free and anyone wearing their Think Pink T-shirt will receive free appetizers. All proceeds from the Think Pink bar and raffle go to the Carson Tahoe Cancer Resource Center for cancer education and support.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong will run for a fourth term as the capital city's top law enforcement officer, announcing his 2014 re-election intentions Tuesday.

In what Furlong described as three "politically quiet but challenging years," crime statistics have trended downward since the 2010 election, which is remarkable given Carson City's economic climate as it continues to deal with the effects of a deep, prolonged recession.

The 7th Annual “Walk in Memory, Walk for Hope” will take place on Sept. 13-14 in 11 different communities across the state. The goal of the event is to increase awareness of the devastating effects suicide has on our nation and state, and to remember those who have been lost to suicide.

In Douglas County the Saturday, Sept. 14 walk will begin at Douglas City Historical Museum, 1477 Hwy 395 North, Gardnerville. Registration begins 8:00 am. In Yerington, the walk will be at the Boys and Girls Club, 124 N. Main St., Yerington. Registration begins at 10:30 am.

Carson City District Attorney Neil A. Rombardo will not seek a third term as the District Attorney of Carson City.

“I want to thank the people I work with in the District Attorney’s Office. They are an impressive team of professionals dedicated to making Carson City a better place. I also want to thank the voters of Carson City for giving me the opportunity to serve the community. It has been an honor to act as their District Attorney for the last seven years,” said Rombardo in a released statement.

This spring, the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District purchased new vehicle extrication tools through grant funds awarded to the fire district through the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety’s Zero Fatalities Program.

The Zero Fatalities Program utilizes the Nevada Strategic Highway Safety Plan to educate citizens and increase awareness regarding safe driving practices in an effort to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on all Nevada public roads.

CARSON CITY — For the second year, online voters picked the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park in Minden as one of six standout sites in the 2013 Nevada Treasures in the Discover Your Nevada contest, officials announced Monday.

The Nevada Northern Railway in Ely, the Star Hotel and Basque Restaurant in Elko, the Lost City Museum in Overton, the Nevada State Museum in Las Vegas and the Pahrump Valley winery were also picked, said Claudia Vecchio, Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs director.

With neighborhood outreach as the theme, Carson City Sheriff's Office organizers say the National Night Out event at Mills Park on Tuesday will also highlight a number of new community wide initiatives.

The event runs from 5 to 8 p.m. and brings thousands of Carson City residents to the park annually in a open house environment, providing partnerships between law enforcement and the community. In Carson City, this event represents the culmination of efforts made to address crime, drugs, and violence and is the largest event of its kind in the area.

Mike Beck brings cowboy songs and the tradition of storytelling through music to Café at Adele’s Thursday, Aug. 22, as the Summer Concert Series on the Veranda continues.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —The U.S. Forest Service and other land management agencies have a new fire safety campaign in California. The One Less Spark, One Less Wildfire campaign is designed to provide constant reminders during this fire season to reduce the numbers of human-caused vehicle and equipment wildfires throughout the state.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office advised Wednesday that a Tier III sex offender — the highest level — has registered and is now living in the area of Ramsey Circle in Carson City.

Steven Ray Glasgow, 43, was convicted in 1989 of second degree rape. The crime was committed in Oregon.

Glasgow is not wanted by the Carson City Sheriff's Office but was required under law to register with the Carson City Sheriff's Office and to provide community notification.

The University of Nevada, Reno’s Nevada Seismological Laboratory has produced stunning time-lapse, high-definition video of the Bison Fire since its inception Friday, July 5.

“This imagery represents an evolution for the lab as it incorporates multi-hazards and climate monitoring using its high-speed microwave IP-based network,” Graham Kent, director of the Seismological Lab said. “These videos are the opening salvo of a demonstration project that will encompass the Tahoe basin and nearby areas such as Reno and Carson City.”

Tickets are still available for the capital city's premiere summer event, the 20th annual Taste of DownTown Carson City, which returns Saturday with a feast for foodies that stretches 13 blocks.

More than 40 restaurants and ten live bands are on tap for this favorite Northern Nevada event to benefit Advocates to End Domestic Violence.

I can remember when, as a young child, I had small square wooden building blocks with painted letters and numbers on all the sides. They were about an inch and a half square. I could use them to learn to count or learn the ABC’s or make words. I could also stack them up and make buildings or forts. Their use was as unlimited as my imagination.

Beginning in October of this year, Nevada counties will have the option to adopt ordinances that would impose fines on individuals under the age of 18 for the possession or use of tobacco products. Senate Bill 177 was introduced by Senator James Settelmeyer of Minden.

Each year people across the country participate in Relay for Life to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. This year one local team is taking a creative approach to raise money and awareness.
