Senator Square: First generation college graduate shares his story with CHS students

Editor’s note: The following was written by Yetti De Luca, Carson High School’s District Work-Based Learning Coordinator.

Sergio Trejo Jr., a Las Vegas native and first-generation college graduate, visited several Carson City schools recently to share his inspiring story about his admittance to medical school. Trejo presented to more than 150 students.

Salvation Army Fundraiser Car Show Sept. 14

Thursday Night Cruise Car Show, benefiting the Salvation Army, will be held Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019 at the Salvation Army offices, 911 E. Second Street between Harbin and Pratt avenues, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. Pre-registration cost is $20 a day of registration costs $25.

Awards for first, second, third place and Best of Show will be presented at 2 p.m.

The event will feature food, music, a 50/50 raffle and Chinese raffle with door prizes.

The car show will help with the Salvation Army's building fund. All vehicles are welcomed and motorcycles, too.

Carson City 6th grader to compete in 2019 National Geographic GeoBee Nevada competition

Nathan Tack, a 6th grader at Carson City's Bethlehem Lutheran School, has been notified by the National Geographic Society that he is one of the semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2019 National Geographic GeoBee Nevada State Competition.

Local teams prepare for Polar Plunge at Lake Tahoe to benefit Special Olympics

Nearly 40 teams representing organizations and businesses throughout western Nevada will take a jump into the chilly waters at Lake Tahoe on Saturday, March 30 for the annual Polar Plunge to benefit Special Olympics.

A Dayton, Nevada, native, DeHaven is the winner of the 2015 James Foley Medill Medal for Courage in Journalism and a two-time recipient of investigative reporting awards from the Nevada Press Association, which acknowledged his work on stories uncovering fraud and tenant intimidation at a low-income housing complex, as well as a previously unreported backlog of parolees in the Nevada prison system.

In its 34th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company has announced Jared Marchegger of Sierra Lutheran High School as its 2018-19 Gatorade Nevada Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Museum of Art announced the 2019 Scholastic Art Award Winners, and on the list were a senior and junior from Carson High and one seventh-grader from Carson Middle School. Emily Richardson, 17-years-old, Sarah Woods, 17-years-old, Keira Serpa, 13-years-old, were all recognized as Gold Key winners.

Carson City Arts Initiative awarded $10,000 grant, part of $90,000 statewide total

The National Endowment for the Arts announced this week that it has awarded grants totaling $90,000 to seven arts organizations and agencies in Nevada for support in projects planned in fiscal year 2019. The Carson City Arts Initiave took home $10,000 for artist talks, art exhibits and more.

Carson City area students win national awards at 2019 Junior Theater Festival West

Students from Wild Horse Children's Theater in Carson City won a Freddie G Award for Excellence in Ensemble Work and earned other recognition at the 2019 Junior Theater Festival West held recently in Sacramento.

Carson City’s Marcus Yeager represents Boys and Girls Club in Youth of the Year competition

The Boys and Girls Club statewide Youth of the Year competition was hosted Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center by Carson City’s Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada.

Carson City’s representative is a 16-year-old Carson High School senior named Marcus Yeager, who is in the top tenth percentile in school and is a Commander in ROTC.

Senator Square: CHS Winterfest 2019 filled with fun and excitement

"Winterflix," a play on the popular Netflix streaming service, was the theme this year at the 2019 Winterfest week at CHS with dress-up days and night-time activities all week long. Some of the events included the Netflix show, "Stranger Things," a Twins Day, "Riverdale," "The Office," and even the ever popular once-a-month Dress for Success competition.
