Whether she is advising first-generation college students to better their lives through higher education or serving as a trustee for K-12 students in the Carson City School District, there are two common denominators in Lupe Ramirez’s education roles: The Western Nevada College Latino Leadership Academy founder and adviser will definitely make a difference and, without a doubt, she will stand out.

The Orchestra Program of Carson City School District is holding its Holiday Concert Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Just the idea of a concert in Carson City is exciting enough, but it gets even better because this musical event will cost audiences absolutely nothing except a little time and effort getting there. Admission is free.

Watching them gather, wearing pajamas, wrapped in blankets, and celebrating the beginning of their senior year, the Class of 2019-2020 gathered together at 6:00 a.m. Aug. 30 on the bleachers of the Carson High School football field to watch the sun rise; it is the beginning of their last year at CHS, and, for some of them, their last year as students who were raised within the Carson City School District, students who went from kindergarten at Mark Twain Elementary to Carson Middle School and have spent the last three years at CHS.

Set that alarm clock if the pituitary gland is not yet ready to do its job, because Monday arrives tomorrow and it is time yet again for students, parents, and even teachers to get out of bed early for the 2019-2020 school year.

CARSON CITY — Northern Nevada Development Authority announced Tuesday that Jim Peckham, Executive Director of Friends in Service Helping since 2009, has been named as the 2019 Pioneer of the Year. NNDA’s Pioneer of the Year award honors an individual who both personally and professionally supports and has had a significant impact on the economic development and growth of the region.

The Carson High School class of 2019 said their goodbyes to teachers June 5, most of the teachers finished their grades the same day and checked out June 7, and a few remaining teachers volunteered to help with graduation Saturday.

As the school year comes to an end, the 2018-2019 Carneta yearbook staff can finally slow down and take a breath. At the end of the week before Spring Break, at 8:30 p.m., the final pages were submitted, and the book was officially finished. After months of interviewing, photographing, and editing, the book is currently being printed by Walsworth Publishing Co., in Marceline, Kansas.

The Nevada Off-Highway Vehicles Program, within the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, is excited to recognize Stan Harger of the Kokopelli ATV Club with its first-ever Trail Partner of the Year award.

As residents of Mesquite, Stan and his wife Patricia have many beloved OHV trails in Southern Nevada. The couple’s favorite OHV ride consists of two 90-mile routes which connect the town of Caliente and Mesquite.

Stop the presses! Wild Horse Children’s Theater looking for actors, singers and dancers, ages 8-21, for the Northern Nevada premiere of the Disney film turned Tony-winning Broadway hit, "Newsies."

Auditions will be held on Friday, March 1 and Saturday, March 2 at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall. Auditions are by appointment only! You must call for an audition slot.

Sassafras Electric Food Joint and The Moonshot Coup will present a free Carson City show featuring award winning singer, songwriter and international artist Nate Currin. With more than 600,000 miles driven and 800 shows performed over the last 12 years, Nate Currin is a troubadour in every sense of the word.

A military career showed Daniel Lear that he wanted to spend his life helping others. Adult life has taken Lear on a few twists and turns, but it hasn’t changed his primary goal to assist people. That desire is closer to becoming a reality as a second-year nursing student at Western Nevada College in Carson City.

THURSDAY: Jazz and Beyond Music Festival

On Saturday, August 26, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Gallery on Main in Genoa, Nevada, will host an outdoor painting workshop with artist Peggy Wynne Borgman, Artists of every level are invited to attend, and may work in oil, acrylic or watercolor. A gourmet box lunch from the Pink House restaurant is included in the workshop fee.

An electric month of local vibes and community events arrives Friday as the 14th annual Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival begins at the historic Bliss Mansion, launching an 18-day, jam-packed schedule featuring original jazz music and various art and film gatherings at multiple venues around the capital city.

Carson High School Performing Arts is proud to announce our upcoming production of "Godspell," the iconic and inspiring Broadway musical by three time Grammy and Academy Award winner, Stephen Schwartz, this Thursday through Saturday, April 13-15 at the Carson City Community Center.

Three-time GRAMMY award winner and legendary saxophone artist Tom Scott will perform with the 17-piece Reno Jazz Orchestra on Sunday, February 12 at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR).

The Northern Nevada Development Authority is now accepting nominations for its annual Pioneer Awards for 2017. The annual awards are presented for outstanding business achievements in the Sierra region of Northern Nevada, with new relocations and expansions in 2016 also highlighted.

What do you need to get in the holiday spirit? Carson City probably has it covered. Watch ‘A Christmas Wish’ with Jimmy Durante at the monthly meeting of the Carson City Classic Cinema Club. Let the talented kids of ‘Strings in the Schools’ entertain you with their annual ‘This is Not a Christmas Concert’ Concert at the Community Center. If you need some bowl-full-of-jelly belly laughs, then the Super Santa Extravaganza, featuring some of the area’s funniest stand-up comics, is for you. You’ll find that in the Brewery Arts Center Black Box Theater. For a good dose of Christmas lights, head to the Johnson Lane area. Off Stephanie Lane, on Chaparral Court, is a spectacular display known as Nevada Christmas.

Come out and enjoy some Christmas fun with Forte Award winner, Nick Josten and some of Northern Nevada’s best stand-up comics as they present a Super Santa Extravaganza.

Start the day making something beautiful. The Muscle Powered Trash Mob descends upon our new downtown for some clean-up and coffee. Kids will enjoy the Tales and Wags program at the Library where they get to read to therapy dogs and acquire a new book in the process. He credits her with setting standards that his restaurant, Cafe at Adele’s, has become renowned for in Carson City.

Pursuing an education in nursing has taken Diana Meza Cabrera on a lengthy road of challenges, experiences and rewards.

Since graduating from high school in 2006, Meza Cabrera consistently found ways to help others. As an outreach educator for the Live Violence Free program in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., she has assisted domestic violence, child abuse and sexual abuse victims. She also been a student assistant at the Humboldt State University Health Center, and has participated in blood and toothbrush drives while attending WNC.

The Sierra Nevada Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America celebrated six individuals, four Silver Spike awards and a number of other awards during its 2015 Silver Spikes banquet, held Thursday, Nov. 19, at the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino.
