US Navy accepts USNS Carson City at Friday ceremony in Alabama

The U.S. Navy on Friday accepted delivery of the seventh expeditionary fast transport USNS Carson City during a ceremony held aboard the ship at Austal USA’s shipyard in Mobile, Alabama.

EPF 7 is the second U.S. Navy ship named for the city in Nevada. The first Carson City was designated PF-50 and commissioned March 24, 1944. She was loaned to Japan in 1953 and served for nearly 20 years in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. Carson City received two battle stars for World War II service.

The opportunity for parents to sign up their children ages 4 to 8 is drawing to a close. There are three dates left to sign up in person at 1440 Fitness, located at 3456 North Carson Street in Carson City.

Walk in registration will be open from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 11, and Tuesday, Feb. 16. The last day to sign up is Saturday, Feb. 20th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

USNS Carson City officially christened at ceremony, remarks by Mayor Crowell

The U.S. Navy christened its newest fast-transport ship, the USNS Carson City EPF-7 at a ceremony Saturday in Mobile, Alabama. Susan Asbury Crowell, wife of Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell, and sponsor of the ship, officially introduced it with a bottle of champagne during the ceremony, which also featured Nevada Congressman Mark Amodei.

The U.S. Navy will christen its newest expeditionary fast transport, USNS Carson City (EPF 7), during a ceremony Saturday, Jan. 16 in Mobile, Ala. Carson City, designated EPF 7, honors the city of Carson City, Nev.

Vice Adm. Joseph P. Mulloy, deputy chief of Naval Operations, Integration of Capabilities and Resources, will serve as principal speaker. Susan Asbury Crowell, wife of the Honorable Robert Crowell, Mayor of Carson City, Nev., will serve as the ship’s sponsor. In a time-honored Navy tradition, she will give the order to “man our ship and bring her to life!”

The gloves are on in fight against Parkinson’s

At the Tazmanian Boxing Club in north Carson City, clients are receiving much more than training to become pugilists. They are gaining an upper hand in the fight against Parkinson's Disease.

Gym owner Francisco Rodriguez has partnered with Nina Vogel, a licensed physical therapist with Carson-Tahoe Health, to offer a therapeutic way for Parkinson’s patients to combat the devastating effects of the neurological disease through the discipline of boxing.

Thoughts of checking and tuning the gear begin to creep into our minds. Before each snow season there is one question we often forget to ask ourselves…are we physically ready? A lot of mountain enthusiasts attempt to keep in shape by hitting the trails, bike riding, paddle boarding or other adventurous outdoor activities, while others enjoy the off season in a different way.

Planes, trains, and automobiles await! The Nevada State Railroad Museum features rides on the McKeen Motor Car this weekend. Don’t miss out on a trip to Virginia City via the Virginia and Truckee Steam Train: locals get a discount on Sundays when they book online. Ormsby Post Acute Care is hosting a classic car show for their residents, so if you have an automobile that fits the bill, please head on over. The Minden-Tahoe Airport is the home to Aviation Roundup Air Show this weekend. You won’t want to miss the USAF Thunderbird Flight Team. Also on some fierce wheels this Sunday are the Carson Victory Rollers. Our roller derby team is hosting a scrimmage and collecting donations of school supplies at the Community Center.

An aviation air show at the Minden Airport, the coin show and fair at the Nevada State Museum, and a fishing derby for the kids at Little Washoe Lake are only the tip of the iceberg. The Pavilion at Mills Park is where you’ll find the annual Carson High Football Boosters Fundraising BBQ. The Quicksilver Dog Agility Trials are always fun to watch, and they’ll be at Fuji Park all weekend. Carson Lanes has family fun indoors and out all day long during their Bowling Blast-off.

'Train Like A Mudder' fitness program begins in Carson City

Well Being-Massage and Functional Fitness will kick off their new “Train Like A Mudder” program Saturday, March 14, in Carson City with classes beginning Monday.

The program, offered for six weeks or 12 weeks, is designed for those participating in the Tough Mudder event at Lake Tahoe, June 13-14, and features exercises that are designed to train for specific obstacles in the popular race.

Western Nevada College Peace Officer Academy honors 19 cadets

The Western Nevada State Peace Officer Academy at Western Nevada College honored 19 students Tuesday, preparing them for careers in law enforcement and other criminal justice fields.

Graduating cadets represent seven cities in Northern Nevada. They completed a 30-credit program that includes 756 hours of Category I training, according to Academy Coordinator Katie Durbin.

New athletic facility opens in Carson City

Rob Heaton has opened Talents Athletic Center, a sports facility located in North Carson that offers programs on agility, speed, strength, conditioning, personal training and group program development for kids 5 to 18.

Fat Bikes!

I still remember my first mountain bike ride. It was back in 1985 at my local BMX shop. The owner showed us the new bike he just got, a big-wheeled, fat-tired bike with low gearing. Our small-wheeled BMX bikes were limited to firmer terrain, and you had push them up the steeper hills.

More than 780 dogs from around the world will compete in the Bonanza Kennel Club of Carson City’s 24th Annual Dog Shows and Trials starting Friday, September 27, 2013 at Fuji Park in Carson City. Events run through the weekend commencing with specialty dog competitions. Additionally, there will be Obedience, Agility, Best of Breed, Junior Handler, All-Breed and Best of Show competitions. There are 109 Breeds or Varieties represented in this year’s shows and trials. Vendors will be on hand with pet products and food items. The event is Free to spectators.
