Nevada Magazine statewide scavenger hunt now underway

Where else in the world can you traverse a forest composed entirely of dilapidated and half-buried cars, photograph a plaster ghost riding a bicycle next to a giant metal penguin and miner, admire eloquent murals depicting history, and watch 30-foot flames shoot from the antennae of a giant metal praying mantis? Nevada, of course. And the 2017 Nevada Magazine Silver State Scavenger Hunt is the perfect way to do it.

There will be some temporary road closures on Monitor and Ebbetts passes south of Markleeville. Yes, Ebbetts Pass is now open. Most any place you go in Alpine County this weekend there will cyclists on the road.

Families will learn the basics of camping while enjoying the outdoors in a safe and fun environment. Activities include: campfire cooking, hiking, camp crafts and more. Limited camping supplies (i.e. tents, sleeping bags, and sleeping pads) may be available for use during the event. Space is limited and reservations are required.

Spend a week this Summer workin' on a National Historic Landmark railroad in Ely, and the best preserved standard gauge railroad in America. Experience what it was like during the golden age of railroading. Become an integral part of the preservation in-progress.

As part of the crew you will help get a train over the hill and back again safely. In the shop, you will have hands on experience maintaining the locomotives and cars. It is dirty, oily, greasy work. Without it, trains don't run. As part of the track crew, you will see up close what it takes to keep the railroad running.

New zip line to go through treetops at South Tahoe this summer

The Silver Rush, a new 4,159-foot long zip line opening this summer at Heavenly's Epic Discovery, will take users from tree-to-tree at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. Overlooking the Carson Valley, Silver Rush is comprised of five segmented zip lines; the final of which flies guests over the waters of East Peak Lake.

Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest urges snowmobilers to use caution while recreating
