Married Dayton Couple identified as two deceased victims in fatal Carson City crash

A married couple from Dayton was identified as the two deceased victims in the crash in Carson City which resulted in multiple injuries according to the Washoe County Medical Examiner.

70-year-old Tana Powell was pronounced dead on the scene.

Her husband Don Powell, 74, was pronounced dead after arriving at Renown Regional Medical Center by CareFlight.

Multiple helicopters and ambulances were called to the scene due to the extensive injuries suffered by victims of the crash.

The driver of the truck that caused the crash after allegedly pulling a large boat far over the capacity of the truck’s capabilities was jailed with multiple charges related to the crash.

This past Thursday, July 6, SOSMC held the second round of an eclectic two round tournament known as the President’s Cup. What makes this competition unique is it’s played over two consecutive tournament Thursdays, but every player gets to use his best score from either round for each hole.

So, if a player has a blowup hole in one round but a better score in the other round, then the better score is used. It’s a fun experience that results in heavy bantering before and after each round.

Some years ago I was invited to participate in a Chautauqua out in Warrensburg, Missouri, alongside Harry Truman and George Washington Carver. We had a grand time of it, and enjoyed each other’s company ever more when we were off duty. In our Warrensburg wanderings I happened to notice a statue of a dog, a hound dog named, “Old Drum.” I thought it quaint to have a statue of a hunting dog in the town square, and attributed it to the soft hearts of the good citizens of Warrensburg. They even sent me home with a pin of Old Drum, dated 1870.

I’m discouraged and upset. After using metal drums and troughs to plant vegetables in, putting down cardboard and mulch, and then framing the tubs in with fenced netting (see picture below), a dang ground squirrel still dug underneath the cardboard and fencing. The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is scheduled to begin thinning trees by hand on Monday, July 10, 2023, on the south end of Prey Meadows north of Glenbrook on the East Shore of Lake Tahoe.

UPDATE 5:30 p.m.: The body has been tentatively identified as one of the missing kayakers. The name of the deceased is being held until next of kin are notified. The body is being transported to Washoe County for a full autopsy. The canyon is reopened to the public and the scene has been cleared.

UPDATE 5:12 p.m.: Sheriff Furlong said one deceased male was retrieved. No ID has been announced at this time.

UPDATE 3:20 p.m.: Sheriff Furlong sent a photo (seen above) of the staging area of the body where responders are working to extract it.

A 55-year-old Carson City man was arrested after admitting to embezzling over $54,000 worth of products from his work.

Deputies were dispatched to a home improvement store on Fairview Dr. Thursday afternoon on an embezzlement report.

Open and frequent communication is a goal of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office. In order to meet that goal, new forms of communication are constantly sought.

Friday morning, the final beam on the new FISH commercial and dormitory buildings went into place.

The beam was signed by over 100 individuals who were invited to leave their mark on the building they helped build through donations over the past year and a half.
