Carson City area weather: Storm brings showers as snow switches to rain in the Sierra
A quick-moving storm brought gusty winds and rain showers overnight to the lower valleys and Carson City region with wet snow in the Sierra before switching over to mostly rain by the time the Tuesday morning commute began.
Overnight there were wind gusts exceeding 50 mph in some valley areas, and 70 mph to 100 mph over mountain passes, said National Weather Service Meteorologist Dawn Johnson. Precipitation should diminish later today. The weather service advises some travel delays in the Sierra remain due to the wet roads.
As of around 6:45 a.m. Mt. Rose Highway between Diamond Peak to Bulls Eye had chains controls in place. State Route 207 Kingsbury Grade and Spooner Summit were experiencing wet roads with a hint of slushy snow near the top of Daggett Pass.
Overnight, however, was a different story, with snow levels dropping to around 7,000 feet, affecting some travel over I-80, and Highway 50 over Echo Summit.
While on the tail end of the system, additional accumulations should be less than 3 inches of wet snow along the higher elevations of the Sierra Crest, according to the weather service.
