Rotary Club of Carson City awards education grant to support purchase of new books
The Rotary Club of Carson City awarded this year’s Carson City School District’s Professional Development Center Grant to the “Literacy and Love of Reading through Social Studies” project.
The proposal was submitted by the District’s Curriculum & Assessment Coordinator Brittany Witter. Club members surprised Witter with the award at the school district offices this week.
The $5,000 grant award will help purchase a set of historical fiction and non-fiction novels for each school within the district for students in 3rd through 8th grades.
“Students can develop a love of learning by engaging in literature that is interesting and exciting, while also learning about important events in history that shape our lives today,” Witter said. “A love of reading and history will encourage students to want to learn about other historical events and inspire them to read more often than they currently do.”
The Rotary Club of Carson City awards the annual grant as part of its commitment to supporting and recognizing educational achievement. The club also funds college scholarships and other educational opportunities for local young people.
Witter says the project will benefit teachers as well. “We will be able to provide ideas and strategies to our teachers which can increase the understanding and impact the novels have on students. Teachers can also learn strategies to enhance the literacy development of their students.”
Witter will present an update on the grant’s progress and goal achievement at a club meeting later this spring.
