The Dog Days aren’t over yet: Bonanza AKC Dog Show continues at Fuji Park this weekend

Nearly 700 top all-breed dogs from across the nation will line up for conformation obedience, rally trials and the coveted AKC National Owner-Handled competition this Saturday and Sunday at Fuji Park in Carson City.
The Bonanza Kennel Club of Carson City is hosting its annual dog show, which brings hundreds of AKC certified all-breed dogs for a weekend of competition and showing. Show and trial hours are from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.
The public is invited to attend the free event and parking is free. For the watching public, attendees should leave their own dogs at home. Instead, attendees can visit with dog owners who will talk about their breeds, how they raised them and their dog's temperament.
Along with the conformation trials and the AKC owner-handled competition, there will be the Canine Good Citizen Test, Trick Dog and agility course testing. New this year will be a Pee-Wee (children ages 5 to 9) competition.
Indoor judging includes all Terrier breeds, all Toy breeds, Boston Terriers, French Bulldogs, Poodles (Miniature and Standard) and Tibetan Spaniels, Terrier Group & Toy Group. All other judging will be outdoors.
In case of bad weather, Groups and Best in Show judging may be indoors.
"The main event is much like what you see on Westminister, where there is judging of the conformation of the dogs," said Candy Roper, president and show chair of the Bonanza Kennel Club of Carson City.
She explained that AKC writes a specific standard for every breed. The dog judges judge according to the breed standard for each breed.
In other words, they are not comparing a St. Bernard to a Chihuahua. "They are are looking for the dog they feel meets the standard the best," said Roper.
The show is also educational as it offers a chance for people to speak with the owners themselves if they are considering specific breeds of dogs to have in their forever homes.
"They can ask questions about their temperaments and how much grooming and exercise and any health problems they have so they can determine if that breed can fit their lifestyle," said Roper.
