Carson City health department announces 2015 flu season community vaccination events
The first week of October marks the official start of flu season in the United States. Beginning in October and lasting through May, flu season is the period when flu germs are most likely to be circulating and to make people sick.
Each fall, the flu returns and brings with it the fever, cough, sore throat, congestion, muscle aches and fatigue that many of us dread. The symptoms can be mild and last only a few days, or can be severe and hang around for weeks. For those with underlying health conditions, like asthma or diabetes, the flu can make those illnesses worse. Even in otherwise healthy people, flu can lead to complications like ear infections and pneumonia.
Carson City Health and Human Services will host a series of flu vaccination clinics throughout Carson City to help build community immunity. By getting a flu vaccine this year, you are not only protecting yourself, but you are also protecting others from falling ill to the flu.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continue to recommend flu vaccination for all people 6 months and older. Overall, vaccination is your best protection against getting the flu. If you are pregnant, have asthma, diabetes, or chronic lung disease (such as COPD or emphysema), flu vaccination is especially important.
In addition, people who live with or care for those at high risk for complications from the flu, including healthcare workers, and household visitors of persons at high risk for complications from the flu should be vaccinated.
In addition to getting a seasonal flu vaccine, you can take everyday preventive actions like staying away from sick people and washing your hands to reduce the spread of germs. If you are sick with flu, stay home from work or school to prevent spreading flu to others.
Carson City Health and Human Services and Douglas County Community Health also provide flu and pneumonia vaccinations as follows:
