Nugget Project vote could be delayed until 2011 (updated)
The yet-to-be-completed plans for the Carson City Center aka Nugget Project may not be voted on by the Carson City Board of Supervisors until after the beginning of the new year, according to City Manager Larry Werner.
Werner said there will be a status update presented to the citizens committee on Sept. 27. Another committee meeting will be scheduled once the plans are finalized, Werner said. The presentation of the full plans had already been delayed twice before, adding two months to the original timeline.
According to the last updated timeline, the committee was supposed to see the finished plans on Sept. 27, with the board of supervisors voting on the project at the end of October.
But because of the delays in getting the complete plan ready, and a newly discovered requirement to bring the plan before the Planning Commission, it may put the vote off until after the new year, Werner said.
This delay could put the Nugget Project square in the middle of the election campaign for two open supervisor seats, since it would be the new board that votes on the project.
In Ward 1, candidate Karen Abowd has been generally supportive of the project, while her opponent Rob Joiner has expressed skepticism about it.
In the Ward 3 race, candidate Day Williams has been outspoken about his opposition, while his opponent John McKenna has also expressed skepticism about the project.
Update: I talked with Werner today, and he clarified his comments to say it wasn't for certain that the vote would be pushed until after the new year. He said they would like to present the project to the board this year, if possible. As such, I changed the story above to reflect this uncertainty.
