Heavy, dense smoke brings unhealthy air quality into Carson City region, western Nevada
Thick heavy smoke from the California fires is causing unhealthy air quality around the Carson City region, prompting the continuation of a dense smoke advisory through at least 5 p.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
Light west-southwest winds will continue to push smoke into the region from several wildfires burning across California, according to the weather service. The near-surface smoke concentration may improve some but looks to degrade during the evening and overnight hours through Tuesday, forecasters say.
According to the Carson City Fire Department Chief Sean Slamon, there are no fires burning within the greater Carson City region as of Monday afternoon. "We are just getting blasted with smoke from the numerous California fires," he said.
The advisory is for the following areas: greater Lake Tahoe, Reno, Washoe County and Carson City areas, Carson Valley in Douglas County, Lyon County, the Western Nevada Basin and Range including Pyramid Lake, Mineral and Southern Lyon counties, Mono County, Surprise Valley Calif., Lassen, Eastern Plumas, Eastern Sierra counties. Go here for a list of counties and cities within the advisory.
As of the latest reading at 3 p.m., the Air Quality Index was in the "very unhealthy' category for Carson City, and "unhealthy" for Gardnerville, Douglas County, and in the greater Reno area, according to airnow.gov. View the hazard area in detail here.
The weather service advises that the smoke is causing hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility. Poor air quality may cause issues for people with respiratory problems.
Persons with respiratory illnesses should remain indoors to avoid inhaling smoke. If driving, the weather service advises motorists to slow down, use your headlights and leave plenty of distance ahead of you.
