Carson City arrests: Man jailed for felony domestic battery, other alleged crimes

A 30-year-old man was arrested Wednesday for suspicion of felony domestic battery with strangulation, preventing a victim from reporting a crime, and being a prohibited person with a firearm, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Kelin Whitten of Carson City was taken into custody at 9:11 a.m. He was also booked for a lessor offense, misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the booking report, deputies were dispatched to an Imperial Way residence in reference to a domestic battery report. Paramedics were also called to the scene.

During the investigation deputies learned the suspect and victim got into an argument over a cell phone, when the suspect then allegedly slapped the victim on the left side of the face with an open hand and then allegedly grabbed her throat and began choking her to the point where she began to lose consciousness. He allegedly said "I'll f**king kill you bitch," the report states.

The victim said she freed herself by grabbing the suspect by the neck and scratching him on the right side of the neck. The victim said when she attempted to leave the suspect slammed the door and allegedly began punching her in the left arm and began to punch her on the left side of her body in the rib area, the report states.

When she went for the door, and was able to put her right foot in the door, the suspect then allegedly took her cell phone and smashed it on the ground to prevent her from calling law enforcement. She stated she escaped the residence and ran to a neighbor's house to contact law enforcement, the report states.

Deputies investigating the matter observed a bump and bruising near her left eye, noticeable bruising on her left upper arm and left side of her ribs, the report states.

Officers arrived and detained the suspect because it was unknown at the time where a known firearm was inside the residence, and that the suspect had allegedly consumed methamphetamine for two days in a row, according to the report.

The suspect was read his Miranda warning and was initially apprehensive. Then he stated the two got into a verbal argument. He stated the victim scratched and hit him because she thought he was cheating on her, he told the investigating officer. He was asked if he had hit or choked the woman. He stated "No, I would never hit a female."

Officers observed the man had injuries and saw that he had several of what appeared to be fresh cuts on his arms and had a scratch on the right side of his neck.

An investigating deputy informed him they learned he had smashed the victim's phone inside the residence. He was asked if they could go inside the residence to corroborate her story with the cell phone or if the officer could photograph the scene. The man stated "no."

Based on the information and evidence, the suspect was taken into custody. While being placed in custody deputies observed a crystal-like substance in his left nostril, appearing to be consistent with methamphetamine. It also appeared that the controlled substance was recently consumed, the report states.

The district attorney's office on-call attorney and a judge were contacted for a search warrant for the entire residence to collect evidence related to the alleged crimes of domestic battery with strangulation, indicia for drugs, drug paraphernalia and to collect the firearm. A judge granted the warrant.

During the search deputies found a handgun in an orange bag in a cabinet above the stove, along with ammunition inside the bag. Inside a clear baggy deputies located drug paraphernalia, a black tooter straw on a corner table, and a CO2 canister, a brown tooter straw on the kitchen counter with crystal-like residue, the report states.

Also found was a damaged Samsung Galaxy phone. The suspect was booked for the following alleged crimes: domestic battery with strangulation, preventing a victim from reporting a crime, prohibited person with a firearm, and drug paraphernalia. Bail: $21,000 cash.

In other arrests:

— A 29-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Wednesday for suspicion of gross misdemeanor child endangerment and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the arrest report, the mother of a juvenile was arrested after Carson City deputies went to the residence for a report of domestic battery. The mother told officers she had smoked methamphetamine in the residence prior to a confrontation with her ex-girlfriend.

The mother agreed to a consent to search. Drug paraphernalia was located in the bathroom of the residence and a small glass pipe in the mother's bedroom, the report states.

Based on the investigation, and what the mother told officers, she was placed into custody for suspicion of child endangerment after having left the residence with the juvenile inside, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bail: $3,774.

— A 24-year-old Carson City man was arrested for three misdemeanor warrants, two from Carson City Justice Court and a third from Dayton Township Justice Court. Bail: $7,340 cash only.
