Carson City Fire Department knocks down structure fire at North Carson Street restaurant

UPDATE: A Carson City Fire Department battalion chief on scene reports the fire was knocked down at 9:15 a.m.
Motorists can expect delays. The cause is under investigation.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Wednesday morning to a structure fire in the 1600 block of North Carson Street.

The fully involved fire was reported at around 9 a.m. and is believed to have started inside a small restaurant, Antojitos La Jefa, which has been evacuated. Nearby apartments were also evacuated. No injuries were reported.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called late Monday afternoon to a vehicle crash with injuries on College Parkway near 20 College Parkway.

Firefighters on the Caldor Fire near South Lake Tahoe continued to work tirelessly throughout the night Sunday into Monday morning, patrolling and holding the fire at current perimeters. Crews continued the aggressive direct attack, mop up, and building upon previously constructed hand line.

Firefighting efforts continue along the lines of the Dixie Fire near Susanville, which was mapped Monday morning at 910,495 acres and is 57 percent contained.

As more mandatory evacuations are being lifted in the South Lake Tahoe area on the Nevada and California side, the Division of Emergency Management in collaboration with state and local agencies are encouraging residents to stock up on essential necessities such as groceries, household supplies and fuel before returning home.

Less than a week after being forced from their homes due to the encroaching Caldor Fire, residents in the city limits of South Lake Tahoe are now able to return home as of 3 p.m. Sunday. Mandatory evacuation orders are being lifted, but the area will still be in a yellow zone, with residents urged to be aware at all times of the news about the Caldor Fire.

All other areas within El Dorado County near South Lake Tahoe remain under Evacuation Order, including Christmas Valley, Meyers and North Upper Truckee.

Heading into Labor Day, temperatures around the Carson City region and lower valleys will be in the low-90s, with the hot weather expected to last through Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Shifting winds and spot fires made for extreme fire behavior Saturday on the eastern flank of the Dixie Fire near Susanville. As of Sunday morning the fire is 893,852 acres and 56 percent contained, according Cal Fire.

As of 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4, some evacuation areas have been downgraded from mandatory to a warning, but South Lake Tahoe is still closed to non-essential traffic.

As of Saturday morning at 7 a.m., the Caldor Fire is reported to be at 37 percent contained, burning at 214,107 acres.

The Douglas County Community and Senior Center remains an active Evacuation Center for residents of Douglas County and Alpine County and is being operated by Douglas County Emergency Management and the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) for Douglas County and Alpine County evacuees affected by the Caldor Fire. Due to this, the facility will remain closed to the public through the Labor Day weekend.

Multiple law enforcement agencies have been in South Lake Tahoe since the Caldor Fire started its eastward surge toward the lake. They assisted with evacuations after the orders were issued on Sunday and Monday, and since then have been on neighborhood patrol looking for those who chose to stay in town for nefarious reasons.

The Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners is currently seeking nominations for the 2021 Wayne E. Kirch Nevada Wildlife Conservation Award.

The Lyon County Board of Commissioners approved a pair of ordinances that curtail amend the development lot sizes smaller than 9000 square feet during their meeting Thursday.
