Events around Carson City for Monday, July 1
Heading into Monday, the first day of July 2019 we leave an action-packed weekend behind us with a long Independence Day holiday week ahead. The activities continue, albeit at a slower place for the first day of the work week. There's art showings and activities for adults and kids, a My Place Hotels job fair, a talk featuring the program director at Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, a swing dance class and more. Enjoy the day!

Here's what's happening Monday:
— Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'New Crop 2019' exhibit. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "New Crop 2019", by artists Mark Combs and Frances Melhop at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sculptor Mark Combs gives viewers two approaches to his metalwork. His earlier distressed metal car-part sculptures are ornamented with soldered rods and bolts reflecting a ruptured system both socially and figuratively. His carefully hammered bone pieces came into shape after hours of forging as a nod to death and celebrations of life. Photographer Frances Melhop documents aging rural structures with classic color photography. In Vanish, her printed enlargements of unnamed 19th century portraits on silk are elevated to fly across our vision like fleeting memories.
— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: Fast Lane, Slow Bake. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) presents an exhibition, "Fast Lane/Slow Bake" by artists Cyndy Brenneman and Tom Drakulich. CCAI will host a reception for the artists on July 12 from 5:00-7:00 p.m.; the artists will give a brief talk about their work at 5:30 p.m. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings or by appointment. For Sierra Room access visit the Carson City Meetings and Events page or call 775-283-7421. Visit the CCAI website for more information.

Volunteers 55 and older are provided meaningful opportunities to draw on their lifetime of experience to serve their communities in a variety of settings. RSVP's Independent Living Programs help keep low income seniors independent and in their own homes as long as possible. Last year over 1,200 RSVP volunteers provided more than 92,000 hours of volunteer service to over 100 public and non-profit community agencies. Those programs include respite care for caregivers, home companions that provide in-home basic needs services, transportation to medical appointments and to pick up prescriptions or groceries, the Lifeline emergency telephone response system, light housekeeping services, pro bono legal services, farmer’s market coupons for low-income seniors, referrals for veterans to benefits and services to which they are entitled, and resistance exercise training that helps keep seniors active. This event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Monday, July 1st, in the banquet room of Carson City's Round Table, on Retail Drive just off College Parkway. Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, these luncheons help keep the lights on at Carson City's Democratic HQ.
