Man on off-road vehicle arrested for DUI after trying to outrun Carson City sheriff's deputy
A 54-year-old man was arrested Wednesday for suspicion of misdemeanor DUI and reckless driving after trying to outrun a motorcycle deputy while riding an off-road four-wheeler, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.
According to the arrest report, a motor patrol deputy was at a traffic light on College Parkway and observed a four-wheeler, off-road vehicle ridden by a man turn left onto College Parkway from North Carson Street.
The officer activated their red and blue flashing lights. The four-wheeler sped up and continued down College Parkway to Imperial Way and made a hard right turn. The officer could hear the four-wheeler gain speed as it took off eastbound on Gardengate Way.
The officer activated their siren. The rider continued across Northgate. The rider looked back at the deputy on the motorcycle to see how close they were to him and continued to speed down Gardengate Way, a residential area with children playing and residents outside.
The rider pulled into a Gardengate Way residence and stated "I was just getting gas and trying to clear it out." The man advised he went down the street to get gas at 7-Eleven. The deputy explained to the man that his speed was clearly excessive and he was trying to get away from her. At one point the man admitted trying to get ahead of the deputy on the straight away, in order to lose them, and even made a joke about how fun it was to go that fast. He said he didn't think the officer could catch him, the report states.
The man was nervous and talking fast during the interaction, the deputy observed. When speaking to the man about the stop and asking him where the VIN number was on the four-wheeler, the officer could smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from the man's person. The deputy noticed the man's eyes were red and bloodshot and, while he was speaking fast at times, he would stumble over his words. He admitted to having a shot and then stated he had several shots of alcohol before riding his four-wheeler to get gas, the report states.
The man agreed to perform standardized field sobriety tests but asked several times if the officer could give him a pass. During the field interview portion of the testing, the man stated he was taking medication for his heart and another medication and stated he was diabetic. He also didn't realize the time, and was off believing it was 4:50 p.m., not 6:15 p.m. He advised he had been drinking vodka and had about 1/2 pint, the report states. The man failed two of three of the field tests and refused the third test because he said he couldn't do it, the report states.
He admitted several times through the testing and investigation that he was intoxicated. He agreed to a preliminary breath test with a result of .211. He was arrested for suspicion of DUI and reckless driving. He agreed to an evidentiary blood draw, according to the report. Bail: $1,544.
