Carson City arrests: Pair booked for alleged burglary also face 23 counts each for mail theft

A man and woman who were arrested early Monday for suspicion of felony burglary and drug possession, also face 23 counts misdemeanor petit larceny charges after they allegedly broke into a mailbox at a Carson City apartment complex and stole mail from those boxes.

According to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report, the two, Ryan Mitchell Pritchett, 28, of Martinez, Calif., and Vanessa Nicole Martinez, 26, of Oakley, Calif., were taken into custody at 12:55 a.m. Monday. Their arrests were a result of investigations into burglary.

According to a booking report regarding the mail theft, officers were dispatched to the Saliman Road apartment complex on March 21 in reference to a mail box theft in the complex in which the box was damaged. Officers were advised the back of the mail box for unit C was damaged.

In video surveillance footage, deputies investigating the matter observed a black Ford Edge drive into the view of the camera, where a male adult with a cap with a red bill, parked alongside the mailboxes while the woman, a female passenger, is seen exiting the vehicle and begins taking all the mail out of the mailbox. She then gets back into the vehicle, which is seen leaving the apartment complex at 1:23 a.m.

On March 22, a CCSO sergeant advised he had pulled over the vehicle believed to be involved and had a male and female detained.

Investigating deputies recognized the man's face from surveillance camera footage, including tattoos that indicated he was a gang member. He was asked where he was at approximately 1:20 a.m. The man replied he was at his motel in Carson City and stated it was a weekly motel. He was asked why he was in Carson City. The man stated "to visit a friend." He would not provide his friend's name.

The man was advised by the officer that he had reviewed video surveillance footage of his vehicle pulling up to a mailbox, and seeing the two on video that matched their descriptions.

The man denied being involved in the incident. Several times he stated that this was all petit crime and none of it mattered to him, the report states.

He asked the officer several times what his bail amount was going to be and when he could post it. The officer advised the bail amount would be a minimum of $20,000. The man scoffed at the officer, stating he had just posted a $100,000 bail in California, the arrest report states.

The woman, who matched the description as the person in the surveillance video, was read her Miranda warning. The woman's stated she did not want to talk without a lawyer present. She then asked what her bail amount would be.

There are 23 counts for misdemeanor petit larceny for both Martinez and Pritchett. Both face felony burglary and drug possession charges as well as possession of burglary tools, a gross misdemeanor offense and possession of drug paraphernalia. Martinez was also arrested for a felony outside agency warrant. Pritchett was also arrested for driving without a valid license.

Bail for Martinez: $50,000 bondable for the outside agency warrant and $28,096 for the alleged offenses in Carson City. Bail amount for Pritchett, $28,096. The case has been forwarded to the U.S. Postal Service.
