Partnership Carson City offers NARCAN training to the public
CARSON CITY — Over a decade ago, Partnership Carson City started as an effort to fight the spread of methamphetamine. Now, it has taken on the role of a coalition to support and organize a variety of services throughout Carson City, including educational sessions on how to use naloxone, commonly known as NARCAN, for the treatment of known or suspected opioid overdoses.
The next naloxone training is on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2021 from 12 to 1 p.m. and the public can join via Zoom here.
“The opioid epidemic is a national health crisis,” said Diana Alonso, PCC Community Health Worker and Outreach Coordinator. “No one wants to think it could happen to someone they know and love, but it does happen. That’s why we all need to be prepared and trained if we witness an overdose. These trainings are a way for us to help educate the general public and get the proper information into as many hands as possible so we can continue to help put an end to this crisis.”
Developed for first responders, family, friends and caregivers, NARCAN is a nasal formulation of naloxone for the treatment of opioid overdose that does not require specialized training. It works by reversing the depression of the central nervous system and respiratory system during an overdose, allowing the individual to breathe normally again.
Partnership Carson City will hold monthly virtual naloxone trainings. The trainings will last one hour and are open for anyone to join. For more information, please visit our website here.
The coalition welcomes the public to increase awareness that prescription opioids can be life- threatening and there are ways to put an end to the epidemic.
