'Oliver! Jr. the Musical,' a twist on the Dickens classic, begins two-weekend run Friday
Wild Horse Children’s Theater presents the Northern Nevada premiere of the Tony and Academy Award winning musical, Oliver! JR.
Performances will take place at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall in Carson City on the weekends of Dec. 2 and 9, with Friday and Saturday evening shows at 7:00 pm and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2:00 pm.
Based on the Charles Dickens’ novel, Oliver Twist, the Broadway Junior version of the show is family-friendly and shortened to 70 minutes.
It is widely hailed as a true theatrical masterpiece by actors and audience members alike and is a perfect show to lead into your holiday season!
The streets of Victorian England come to life as Oliver, a malnourished orphan in a workhouse, becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker.
Oliver escapes to London and finds acceptance amongst a group of petty thieves and pickpockets led by the manipulative Fagin.
When Oliver is captured for a theft that he did not commit, the benevolent victim, Mrs. Brownlow, takes him in.
Fearing the safety of his hideout, Fagin employs the sinister Bill Sikes and the sympathetic Nancy to kidnap him back, threatening Oliver’s chances of discovering the true love of a family.
The cast is led by Rylan Myler and Stewart Davis, who share the part of Oliver Twist, and Kai Moore and Alex Macy, who play the Artful Dodger.
Nancy is played by Laura Bennet and Kendall McDonald. Ella Kent plays the devious Fagin and Phoenix Burke takes on the role of Bill Sikes.
Rounding out the production is a talented group of over 50 young actors who sing and dance the well-known score in musical numbers such as "Consider Yourself," "Where Is Love?", "As Long As He Needs Me" and "Food, Glorious Food."
The director of Oliver! JR., Carol Scott, brings a fresh, new twist to Oliver Twist.
“The visual and creative design of this production is based on the aesthetic and technology inspired by the Steampunk movement,” Scott said. “The set, costuming and staging, are inspired by the works of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, and the cast has been very excited to fun ways to bring each character’s personality out through their costumes.”
