Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space seek volunteers for wood duck box installs
Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space is partnering with Ducks Unlimited and UNR students to install wood duck boxes along the Carson River corridor.
Organizers on Saturday, Nov. 4, from 10 a.m. to noon, will be installing 15 wood duck boxes for female wood ducks to nest in next spring. These boxes replicate tree cavities that female ducks would usually use for nesting purposes and provide additional security from predators, such as raccoons.
Volunteers are welcome to learn more about duck boxes and help provide nesting spots for future wood duck mothers.
Location: Riverview Park 600 Marsh Rd. Carson City.
Need to Know: Volunteers will meet at Riverview Park and will be separated into two different groups.
The wood duck box install locations will be along the river on the Empire Ranch side and on the Buzzy’s Ranch side. Volunteers will need to come prepared to walk approximately 1.5 miles down to the site on wide gravel paths with some elevation gain. Volunteers will be getting on step ladders, no more than 5ft. off of the ground. We will have powered hand drills to install the boxes.
All necessary tools and equipment will be supplied. Organizers anticipate walking to the sites and installations will take the full 2-hours. Volunteers will need to wear closed-toed shoes and long pants. Fall is here, so make sure to check the weather and dress in appropriate layers.
