Nevada Communities celebrate Red Ribbon Week beginning Monday
Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the nation reaching millions of Americans every year during the fall. By wearing red ribbons and participating in themed events, people pledge to live sober and healthier lives. The 2023 theme is "Be Kind to Your Mind. Live Drug Free."
With a mutual goal of promoting drug-free living, many groups participate in Red Ribbon Week in the Lyon County region. The annual event begins Monday, Oct. 23 and continues through Oct. 31. Organizations such as Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties, schools and Boys & Girls Clubs are united in using evidence-based programs on substance use prevention. Red Ribbon Week is one part of their ongoing prevention message.
People find all sorts of creative ways to unite and celebrate the benefits of living drug-free during Red Ribbon Week.
Healthy Communities’ delivered large banners, stickers and other Red Ribbon Week items to schools in Lyon County and to Boys & Girls Clubs sites in Yerington and Dayton to help celebrate the campaign.
Schools across Lyon County have participated in the annual event for many years. Watch for your child’s school announcements about Red Ribbon Week activities.
For example, Riverview Elementary School in Dayton is inviting students and staff to celebrate with daily themes during the school week of October 23-October 26. On Monday they’ll wear red, and on Tuesday they’ll be “dressing their best.” Wednesday is wear pink day, and on Thursday they’ll wear their RES spirit colors and Be Kind t-shirts.
Sutro Elementary School in Dayton will also mark the event with daily themes October 23-October 26. On Monday students and staff will “rally in red,” wearing red to signify that they’re “standing up to drugs.” Tuesday the theme is “peace out to drugs” and students can wear tie-dye clothing. On Wednesday you’ll see lots of sports jerseys when students take on the theme “team up against drugs.” Students are invited to wear pajamas to school on Thursday with the theme of “follow your dreams: don’t do drugs.”
Families and schools are also encouraged to enter the 2023 National Red Ribbon Week Contest. Entries are accepted until November 1, 2023. To find out more about the contest rules, go to redribbon.org/contest.
