New Carson City organization 'Connections' uses the power of storytelling to promote meaningful relationships
It launched in Carson City in February 2023 by inviting members of the community to a one-hour “Connections” gathering where people share stories, engage in conversation and learn how to build and maintain meaningful relationships that bring more joy to our lives and the lives of others.
Based on studies that show people with strong and positive relationships live longer and happier lives, Connections is dedicated to bringing people together to foster these types of relationships.
“Harvard, Stanford and many of the other prestigious universities, have conducted studies proving that positive relationships are the number one factor in living longer, healthier and happier lives,” says Don Kuhl, founder and benefactor of Connections Central. “I was not really surprised by these findings, but it occurred to me that the true value of meaningful relationships doesn’t appear to be widely recognized or embraced despite the positive impact they can have in our lives.”
Don is a long-time Nevadan and the founder of The Change Companies and Train for Change (based in Carson City), and the creator of Interactive Journaling — a behavior change process that has served over 25 million people worldwide.
"There is an overwhelming need right now,” he adds, “when many social dynamics are sadly moving people toward isolation, loneliness and dissension." He points to our obsession with social media and cell phones, the political division, and COVID as contributors to the situation.
“It’s no wonder the US Surgeon General has issued an advisory on the epidemic of loneliness. Connections is one solution,” Kuhl adds.
Connections gatherings are currently hosted every Saturday at Comma Coffee, 312 S Carson St, Carson City, from 10:30 am until noon, and the third Thursday of every month from 5 to 6:15 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W King St, Carson City. There is no charge to attend Connections gatherings and refreshments are offered.
