Carson City announces September Park Ranger-led programs

Every month, the Carson City Park Rangers offer various Ranger-Led programs that include educational opportunities, historical fun, events, and exciting adventures. All programs are offered for free and take place in one of the many Carson City parks and open space areas.

Online Registration is often required so Park Rangers have a proper head count. All programs are subject to cancellation due to Park Ranger availability; registered participants will be notified. You can find more information about each program by going here.

Regional Jr Ranger Day
For the second year in a row, Carson City kids, as well as surrounding areas, can become the ultimate Jr Park Ranger by attending the Regional Jr Ranger Day! This year, the event will be hosted by Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space at Galena Creek Regional Park Visitor Center,18250 Mt Rose Hwy, Reno. Festivities began at 9:00am and will run until 12:00pm. The Carson City Park Rangers as well as Nevada State Parks will be joining Washoe County.

Washoe County Rangers will be debuting their new JR Ranger Adventure Guide at this event. Activities include: working on Jr Ranger Adventure Guides from all agencies, Washoe County Park Rangers Leave No Trace adventures, a fun volunteering activity, and much more! If you, or a Jr Ranger you know, has been sworn in from one of these agencies, they can attempt to get sworn in by the others to become the ultimate Jr Park Ranger.

Creatures of the Night
Join a Carson City Park Ranger and Wildlife Oddities and Local Fauna (W.O.L.F) for an immersive adventure into the mysterious world of nocturnal animals. Discover the secrets of the creatures that come alive when the sun goes down and explore their fascinating adaptations for life under the cloak of darkness. W.O.L.F. will be bringing their collection of taxidermy animals to give you a closer look at these local critters!

The program will be held inside Fuji Hall and chairs will be provided. Whether you’re a seasoned naturalist or a part time explorer, “Creatures of the Night” offers something for everyone and is suitable for all ages and families.

Coyote Walk 2023
It’s the time again for one of the year’s most anticipated hikes! Join the Park Rangers for an educational walk all about the coyotes! While enjoying a walk along the Carson River from Silver Saddle Ranch, you will get to learn everything about coyotes from identification to their habits and culture. If you have been afraid of coyotes while hiking in this area, this is the walk for you.

Meet at the Silver Saddle Ranch parking lot and come prepared with layers, water, closed-toe shoes, and an excitement for our coyote friends! The hike will be roughly 2 miles over flat terrain with a trail rating of "easy". This hike will be fall during sunset hours, so also bring flashlights strong enough to catch the glow of coyote eyes.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Tuesday evening to a vehicle crash involving a motorcycle in the area of East 5th Street and Saliman Road.

Traffic was slow going in Carson City along Highway 50 East following two crashes Tuesday, according to Nevada State Police. There was a crash reported at around 3:50 p.m. on US-50 East and Nye Lane. There was a second crash at 5:18 p.m. reportedly near US-50 and Brown Street.
Injuries are unknown at this time. Motorists can expect delays.

Community info night on youth vaping

Dayton, Nevada - Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties (HCC) will offer a free information night for parents and other community members on the health risks of youth vaping, strategies for preventing vaping and ways to support youth in leading healthy lives.

This year 17 students attended the state FFA Convention and participated in 7 different contests. One of Carson High School's own students, Melanie Burrett, was elected the 2024-25 Nevada State Reporter. Meanwhile, Maximillian Bushey was placed on one the Nom Com team for the State Office during the convention.

Mark Twain Days (Year Two) was yet another triumph, particularly the group photo, where every kid and her grandmother sported humongous mustachios. I can’t wait to see the print. My personal favorite event was, “Connections.” A hundred folks gathered together upstairs in the Brewery Arts Center to share personal connections that improved their lives.

A brief vehicle pursuit Monday morning where the driver of a white Kia failed to yield to Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies ended with a felony traffic stop near the intersection of William and Roop Street. The male driver was detained and is being questioned.

Western Nevada College celebrates the achievements of its 2023-24 graduates on Monday in Carson City, with a second ceremony planned for Thursday, May 23 in Fallon.

An approximately 14 foot by 60 foot mobile home is disabled in the center turn lane at the corner of Fairview Drive and Steamboat Drive in Carson City and has disrupted the flow of traffic. Motorists can expect delays through Monday morning.

Youth Theatre Carson City is thrilled to announce auditions for Nickelodeon’s The Spongebob Musical, Youth Edition, a 60-minute adaptation of the hit Broadway show based on the iconic Nickelodeon series!
