Carson Girl's Golf Wins Again
Carson High School notched its second win in girl's Sierra League golf action at Sierra Sage on Monday. Carson's 358 was 16 better than second place, Bishop Manogue. Leading Carson again were the Beglin sisters with Jill and Karen both shooting solid rounds.
Jill carded a one-over 72, with three birdies paired with three bogeys. "I had a lot of fun today, and I hit some good shots. The only thing I'd change is making a few more putts."
Karen also had three birdies, but had a little trouble getting up and down on a few holes to finish at 75. "Today I left a few shots out there, but I'll get it next time," she said. Coach Greenlee is continually impressed with how long and straight they hit the ball. "Even more impressive, though, is their mental toughness. For both of them, two of their three birdies came after a bogey."
Sophia Taggart rebounded from last week with a solid 101. Greenlee was happy with her play, although he pointed out she had three triple bogeys. "We worked on her swing plane with the driver after last week's match and she hit it much better. She just needs more tournament golf to be better at course management."
Gabby Montes carded another personal best with a 110. She noted that her play is steadily getting better and the team needs that from her. Kassidy Cooley had a rough front nine, but played better on the back coming in with a 51, finishing at 115. "It was a tough start for Kassidy," said Greenlee, "but she's a senior and I knew she'd get it under control." Freshman Sarah Wiggins rounded out the scoring, also with a 115. "I need to improve my golf game by taking time and commit to hitting the ball," said Wiggins.
Carson currently leads the Sierra League after the first two out of six matches. Three of the six teams will go to regions, and then the top two northern Nevada schools will play at state, which is in the north this year. The next league match will be held at Lakeridge Golf Course on Tuesday, Sept. 4.
