Carson High girls win first golf match in Sierra League play
The Carson High girls golf team started off the season with a first place finish in Sierra League play on their home turf at Eagle Valley East.
After qualifying for state last year, the girls are motivated to get back there again this year. Jill and Karen Beglin led the field with a 69 and 72, respectively.
Jill made the turn at 32, carding three birdies and highlighting her front nine with an eagle on the par 5 fifth hole. She started the back nine with a birdie on 10, but then cooled off a little as the wind picked up.
Karen, a sophomore, also played an extremely solid round with three birdies, but matched that with three bogeys to stay even.
"Those two girls are obviously the core of our team. They not only provide us exceptional golf, but they are leaders and even coaches for the rest of the team. Jill is especially motivated as this is her senior year."
Returning from last year are senior Kassidy Cooley and sophomore Gabby Montes. This is only Kassidy's second year and carded her lowest round with a 97. Gabby turned in a very solid round of 113, especially considering her stroke average last year was 129.
Completing the Carson match team are two newcomers, junior Sophia Taggart and freshman Sarah Wiggins. Sarah had a very respectable 103, highlighted by a birdie on the par 3 fourth. Sophia's group was disqualified for playing a hole out of order, but her final score would have been 104.
"I take partial blame on that," said Coach Wade Greenlee. "Being early in the season we haven't really played a complete back nine, and her group just got confused. All six girls are solid players and it's very possible they'll all be under 100 by regions, which will give us an excellent chance to represent Carson at state again."
Rounding out the Carson team are senior Lauren Thompson, juniors Karrina Ferris and Ali Sharp, sophomore Brooke Gudmundson, and freshman Justyce Quintana.
