One of Carson City’s Most Popular Trainers Passes the Torch

On Sept. 1 the Carson City fitness mainstay Body by Pilates studio will be changing hands as Master trainer and founder Jan Shaw will be handing over the reins to Carson resident and certified Pilates instructor Angela Kennedy.

Shaw became interested in Pilates after a chance meeting with legendary trainer Leslee Bender. Jan trained at Bender’s Reno Studio receiving her certifications and opened Body by Pilates in 2003. The studio quickly became a local favorite for Pilates training and Yoga and has remained a popular training campus throughout the last decade.

Another chance meeting would introduce Shaw to Kennedy.

In late 2013 Shaw had decided to close and retire and set a target date of September 1st, 2014 as the official closing. In early spring of 2014, Shaw fell ill and tried scheduling an appointment at her doctor’s office. After finding out her Doctor was unavailable, she took another appointment with a different doctor.

Kennedy was the nurse on duty that day, and she and Jan had their first encounter at the scales…arguing about the necessity of getting weighed.
Kennedy exited the examination room and minutes later the doctor came in. The doctor asked Shaw what she did for a living, and Jan stated that she owned a Pilates studio. The doctor said “I have someone you should meet…she is a Pilates instructor!”

The doctor poked her head outside the door and yelled for Angela to come in…in walked the same woman Shaw was arguing with just minutes before. The two stopped arguing about weight and began talking about Pilates and the passion they shared. Shaw asked Kennedy if she would be interested filling in from time to time at Body By Pilates…Kennedy, an active Pilates instructor, agreed.

Over the next few weeks, Shaw and Kennedy began to grow a bond and Shaw offered Kennedy the opportunity to take over ownership in September. Shaw says : “I am a big believer in everything happens for a reason”, “It was a chance meeting that led me into Pilates, and meeting Angela was another one of those weird chance meetings…”

Kennedy says that she is ecstatic that all of the Body by Pilates instructors will be staying on after the transition. She says: “All of the instructors bring so much knowledge and talent to their classes…I feel very honored to be associated with them all…It feels like Family!”

Angela Kennedy started her fitness career in 1984 as a personal trainer & AFAA fitness instructor. Angela is a certified massage therapist in the state of California as well as a certified Physical Therapy Technician. Kennedy is a certified Mat & Reformer Pilates instructor and continues her education to reach her goal of becoming a Master Trainer.

Kennedy takes over Body by Pilates on September 1st, with several new classes added to an already packed schedule. She is offering a 15% discount on all packages if you sign up before September 30th, 2014. Kennedy says: “We just want to thank the community for supporting this wonderful studio for the last 12 years and the discount is a way to show our appreciation.”
