Upcoming Alzheimer’s Association event highlights impact of Alzheimer’s on the workplace
49,000 Nevadans live with Alzheimer’s disease, a degenerative brain disease that affects memory, thinking and behavior. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. The prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease in Nevada will grow 30.6 percent by 2025, reaching 64,000 Nevadans.
In 2019, 153,000 Nevada caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients provided 175 million hours of unpaid care. Compared with caregivers of people without dementia, twice as many caregivers of those with dementia indicate emotional, financial and physical difficulties.
The burden of caregiving significantly impacts the workplace:
• 6 in 10 caregivers were employed in the past year.
• These individuals worked on average 35 hours/week while caregiving.
• 83 percent of care provided at home is delivered by family, friends or other unpaid caregivers.
• 57 percent of employed caregivers had to go in late, leave early or take time off due to caregiver demands.
• 18 percent of caregivers went from full-time to part-time or cut back hours. Nine percent of caregivers gave up working entirely.
The Alzheimer’s Association works to alleviate the stresses that caregivers endure by offering a variety of services on a monthly basis, including no-cost: specialized meetings and consultations for individuals with early stage Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder, often with concurrent meetings for family members; support groups throughout the region; information, education, and community resources; and respite care reimbursement in partnership with Nevada’s Aging and Disability Services Division to help provide financial assistance to family caregivers.
To shed light on how Alzheimer's disease impacts the workforce, the Alzheimer’s Association is hosting a virtual event with special guest speaker AARP Nevada. RSVP to gmbrackett@alz.org to join and learn more about the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association and how you can strengthen your organization as you advance the fight to end Alzheimer’s. Two 30-minute sessions will be offered:
