Offroad community, trail group works to preserve and protect Lyon County ghost town

CARSON CITY — Terry Kerns, substance abuse and law enforcement coordinator with the Nevada Office of the Attorney General, spoke at Carson High School on Thursday morning to more than 300 freshmen about the opioid crisis facing Nevada and the science of addiction. She will offer the same presentation again tomorrow to the remaining 300 freshmen on the same topics.

A long-held progressive policy goal of raising Nevada’s minimum wage is again surfacing at the Legislature, with its best chance to pass in nearly two decades coming even as some advocates are asking lawmakers to raise the floor even higher.

UPDATE 1:05PM: According to Lyon County Sheriff's Office Lt. Abel Ortiz, the man who was believed to be carrying a rifle, was instead carrying a pellet gun and had been shooting squirrels at a park near the elementary school. Lt. Ortiz said the man knew that he had made a mistake and was embarrassed for creating the situation. The lieutenant added that the schools did what they were supposed to and there was no threat.

"The precautionary Lock-In at all three Dayton area schools were lifted as of 12:13 p.m. As a result of the prompt actions of law enforcement, school operations have proceeded as normal with all students and staff safe and secure."

Schools in the Dayton area went on voluntary lockdown late Wednesday morning after a report of someone driving around the Dayton High School campus in a pickup with a rifle in the truck, Lyon County Manager Jeff Page said. The voluntary lockdown was a precaution, said Page who contacted Lyon County sheriff's office officials.

Carson Valley Middle School student Ana Marquez, from Minden, placed second in the National Radon Poster Contest, after taking home first place in the Nevada Radon Poster Contest. She competed against student winners from 10 other states and will receive $300 for her poster, “Radon: Test Your Home Now.”

A Carson City woman was arrested Tuesday for suspicion of burglary after allegedly stealing money from a local dry cleaning business, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

The Kiwanis Club of Carson City is hosting its annual Pasta Feed to benefit Meals on Wheels Carson City this Saturday, April 13, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive.

Tickets are $6, and include pasta, garlic bread, salad, beverage and dessert. Kids under 5 eat free.

Carson City’s Papa John’s Pizza, part of the national chain, is now closed, according to a sign on the front of the building which reads, “Closed. Thank you to all our patrons.”

Reno’s Renown Medical Center has branched into the capital city with its new Urgent Care, located at 2814 N. Carson Street next to the Eagle Valley Medical Center.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the new location Tuesday morning. In addition, according to Mark Beauchamp of Shahren Beauchamp Builders, who were the general contractors on the Urgent Care, a Primary Care Facility will be opening mid-May in South Carson, near Starbucks.

CARSON CITY — Carson High School teachers and support staff were surprised this morning at their regularly scheduled 7 a.m. faculty meeting in the library before classes began. A total of $10,000, parceled out in individual envelopes containing $50 bills, sat neatly organized on a table across the room. Every teacher, custodian, kitchen worker, counselor, para pro and faculty member was given $50 to “Pay It Forward.”
