Night Off the Streets manager to speak at Democratic luncheon
Speaking at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Jodi Miller, center manager for Night Off the Streets. NOTS works to connect clients with city agencies and non-profits to address issues that contribute to being unhoused, including medical problems, lack of affordable housing, and lost documents needed for job interviews. Miller oversees warming center operations and serves as a referral advocate to connect clients to services that help them find housing.
Miller has professional experience working for Carson City’s Community Counseling Center, Vitality Unlimited, and Friends in Service Helping. She earned a certification as a peer recovery support specialist and has volunteered with Carson City Alano Club and Wylie House. She is working towards a bachelor’s degree in social work.
The NOTS warming center was founded six years ago after four homeless people died of hypothermia while sleeping outdoors. Since the center opened, no one has died from exposure to the cold in Carson City.
The NOTS warming center is hosted in the winter months by a different church each month. More than 100 volunteers serve during the winter to support the shelter.
When Miller was hired for this position in April, NOTS founder and president Deacon Craig LaGier told the press, “When we interviewed Jodi, we were so impressed with her experience and desire to do what she is doing. She told us that the center manager position is her dream job. That told us that this is not just a job for her, but a vocation.”
Sponsored by the Men's Committee of the Carson City Dems, this event is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Monday, July 17th, and can be attended either in person at Black Bear Diner, inside Max Casino, or online via Zoom. The presentation will begin after all the lunch orders have been taken, around 1:30. Those wishing to be on distribution for luncheon Zoom links should contact Rich Dunn at richdunn@aol.com.
