August 14, 2023 - 8:00am Creativity and talent abound from Western Nevada College’s art students in the Capital City Arts Initiative’s Fresh Outlook 2023 exhibition.
The free exhibit is open to the public through August 17, 2023 in the Community Development Building (the Brick), 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. The Brick is open to the public, M-F, 8am - noon, 1-4pm. The exhibition video tour will be online soon at ccainv.org
"Fresh Outlook 2023" features 57 art works by 25 students from Western Nevada College’s Carson City campus. They used a wide variety of art media including drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, and ceramics.
Participating students include: Callie Carlin, Nancy Lee Clark, Shiloh Cyphers, Michel Galgiani, Randall George, , Ibis W.K. Hood, Hailey Jeffries, Stanley Juchtzer, Meg Klasko, Karyn Knecht, Winnie Kortemeier, John P. Lagios, Margit, Fraser Mason, Tess Nelson, Kaylee Nielsen, Marietta Sophie Paul, Emma Pitman, Andrea Sanchez De loza, Johnny Sayegh, Christian Service, Jess Sollini, Jessica Visnovits, Keana Wong, and Maria Woods.
Faculty member, Rachel Stiff, advised the students on art and life as an artist: “Being an artist comes with great responsibility and a unique set of challenges. Maintain this gift and build a life based on what you love. Creativity is not a gift or a talent only bestowed upon certain individuals, it is a skill and it is a practice. Don't wait for inspiration, it may never come – just get started. As an artist you will spend much time by yourself. Learn to value this time. It's when you can hear your own thoughts and when you make things. Schedule and protect this space. Some of our best work comes from our mistakes. Learn to celebrate what is perceived as failure. These mistakes often serve as opportunities to learn. They even separate your work from others. Develop your process and learn to love it as much as, if not more than the outcome or the product. Get into the habit of documenting your work.” She closed with, “You’re an artist now. Keep going.”
Motivation and creative inspiration for the students came from their instructors: Teri Barnes, Professor Jayna Conkey, Rachel Moseley, Colleen Reynolds, Professor Rachel Stiff, and Matt Theilen.

This show is another in CCAI’s ongoing series of student exhibitions in the Brick.
