'Fresh Outlook 2022' exhibition runs now through August 18 at Carson City's Brick building
Creativity and talent abound in the Capital City Arts Initiative’s "Fresh Outlook 2022" exhibition happening in Carson City.
The free exhibit is open to the public now through August 18, 2022 in the Community Development Building (the Brick), 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. The Brick is open to the public, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m., to noon, 1 to 4 p.m. The exhibition video tour will be online soon at ccainv.org.
"Fresh Outlook 2022" shows 37 art works by 27 students from Western Nevada College’s Carson City campus. They used a wide variety of art media including drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, and ceramics.
Participating students include: Aspen Carrillo, Shiloh Cyphers, Ryan Defalco, Summerlynn Dennis, Jackie Estes, Jacob Flynt, Kaden Grimes, Katherine Holley, Winnie Kortemeier, Carmen Maciel, Jessica Matthew, Ethne Myler, Katherine Oppedahl, Alejandra Ortiz, Marletta Sophie Paul, Bryan Pott, Karyme Salgado, Erynn Schrauth, Joseph Torres, and Madeline Wilson.
Faculty member, Rachel Stiff, advised the students on life as an artist: “Being an artist comes with great responsibility and a unique set of challenges. Maintain this gift and build a life based on what you love. Creativity is not a gift or a talent only bestowed upon certain individuals, it is a skill and it is a practice. Don't wait for inspiration, it may never come – just get started. As an artist you will spend much time by yourself. Learn to value this time. It's when you can hear your own thoughts and when you make things. Schedule and protect this space. Some of our best work comes from our mistakes. Learn to celebrate what is perceived as failure. These mistakes often serve as opportunities to learn. They even separate your work from others. Develop your process and learn to love it as much as, if not more than the outcome or the product. Get into the habit of documenting your work.” She closed with, “You’re an artist now. Keep going.”
Motivation and creative inspiration for the students came from their instructors: Teri Barnes, Professor Jayna Conkey, Frances Melhop, Colleen Reynolds, Janice Shedd, Professor Rachel Stiff, and Matt Theilen.
Sharon Rosse, CCAI Executive Director, said “CCAI is delighted to present these strong art works to the community. It is great to work with WNC faculty and students to present this excellent exhibition and is grateful for their support. Fresh Outlook 2022 demonstrates the depth and diversity of the artists’ creativity.”
This show is another in CCAI’s ongoing series of student exhibitions in the Brick.
