Carson City-based Associated Press reporter featured at Monday's Democratic tele-luncheon
Featured speaker at Monday's Democratic tele-luncheon will be Sam Metz, capital reporter for the Associated Press and a corps member of the Report for America Statehouse News Initiative. Report for America is a nonprofit national service program, sponsored by the Boston-based GroundTruth Project, that develops fellowships aimed at talented, early-career journalists of different mediums, including print, photography, film and radio broadcast.
In their call for applications, Report for America stated, "We are looking for talented, ethical, insanely hard-working, gutsy, open-minded, service-oriented journalists to inform communities and hold powerful institutions accountable." Having met those qualifications, Sam Metz made the cut for the plum AP job covering the Nevada state legislature, with special focus on water, education and health care. In the course of his tenure he has covered the COVID-19 pandemic's devastating impact on government revenues, attempts by the 81st legislative session to craft a budget that fit within those fiscal constraints, and the relief being provided by the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan.
In addition to Sam Metz in the state capital, Report for America also sponsors two other up-and-coming Nevada journalists: Lucia Starbuck, who reports on the Education and Latino communities at KUNR Public Radio in Reno, as well as writer and videographer Jonathan Ng at the the Las Vegas Review-Journal, who covers the non-profit and charity sector.
Sam Metz most recently covered California politics for The Desert Sun and the USA TODAY Network in Palm Springs. His work on wildfires, criminal justice and agriculture has won awards from the California Newspaper Publishers Association and the Investigative Reporters and Editors organization based at the Missouri School of Journalism. He previously spent two years in Morocco as a Fulbright Scholar, researching and reporting on migration in the Mediterranean. His work has appeared in VICE News, Quartz and The New Republic. He grew up in Illinois, swam at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, and graduated from UC Berkeley, where he was part of the men’s swimming team that won two NCAA championships.
Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, this event is scheduled for noon on Monday, March 29nd, and will be held online via Zoom teleconference due to social distancing restrictions at in-person venues. Those wishing to be on distribution for these Zoom links should email Rich Dunn, Men's Committee Events Coordinator, at richdunn@aol.com.
