Carson High School student wins Lions Club youth speaker competition
Nasia Perkins, a sophomore at Carson High School, won the Carson City Host Lions Club Student Speaker Contest on February 12th held at La Capital Cafe and Grill in Carson City. She was awarded a stipend of $75. Ms. Perkins is a member of the Carson High Speech and Debate Team coached by Patrick Mobley.
The topic of the Contest was “What Risks Does A.I. Pose to the Future of American Culture?” Miss Perkin’s speech was selected by a panel of judges for its originality, main points being supported by evidence, conclusion, emphasis, voice control, enthusiasm, and poise. Judges for the local-level contest were Craig Swope, Micheal Hurlbert, and retired judge Robey Willis.
Other students who entered the Contest were Emily Tran, a senior at Carson High; Summer McGill and Samantha Anderson, both juniors at Carson High; and Kyle Allen, a sophomore at Carson High. Each received a $25 stipend for their participation in the contest. All are members of the Carson High Speech and Debate Team.
Lion Ken Haskins, chairman of the event, said “These students made insightful and well-researched speeches. We’re very proud of them.”
Nasia will go on to compete at the Lions District 46 zone level to be held on March 9th at the Nashville Social Club at 1:30. The winner there will be awarded $125 and will advance to the regional level. The Region I winner will be awarded a $1,250 scholarship and will advance to the District level, which includes 41 clubs throughout Nevada and 6 clubs in California. The District winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship. The public is invited to attend any of the competitions.
