Prison Medical Care Lecture
CARSON CITY — The Nevada State Prison Preservation Society will sponsor an educational lecture on the issues surrounding prison medical care by Dr. Karen Gedney. Dr. Gedney will also discuss her experiences in caring for inmates over a three decade career. The lecture will be presented February 17, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. in the Ormsby Room of the Carson City Sheriff’s Offices, 911 East Musser Street.
Karen Gedney, MD, ABAARM is board certified in both internal medicine and anti-aging regenerative medicine. After her education and training, she began a four-year payback in 1987 in a male medium security prison. The four years turned into a near 30 year career dedicated to improving prison medical care in ways that gained her national recognition. She helped pioneer HIV care in correctional settings and was awarded the “Nevada Heros for Humanity Award” in 2000. She was also recognized by the American Correctional Association with a “Best in the Business Award.” She left the prison industry in 2016 and has remained active by working for a prison environment that focuses on healing, re-integration, and crime prevention.
In addition to Dr. Gedney’s lecture, the Society’s quarterly meeting will include Glen Whorton’s review of the Society’s efforts to provide public access to the Nevada State Prison’s buildings and grounds. Public access to the prison’s buildings and grounds is restricted until completion of a change-of-use permit process. Structural changes to buildings and grounds needed to complete that process are underway and paid for with the society’s funds.
The Nevada State Prison Preservation Society is a 501 (c) (3) organization dedicated to maintaining, preserving, and improving the historically important Nevada State Prison, which the state closed in 2012. Its mission includes managing Nevada State Prison as a resource for historians, civic and cultural events, special interests, scientists, students, and the curious. The Society works closely with the Nevada State Historic Preservation Office to ensure the Nevada State Prison remains a valuable state asset.
