Carson City based Rice Hydro, Inc. helps students launch aerospace engineer careers

RICE Hydro Inc., located in Carson City, Nev., congratulates the University of Colorado Boulder, Sounding Rocket Laboratory on its successful launch and recovery of their Obsidian rocket. This student developed rocket reached Mach 2 and an altitude of 35,000 feet.
CU SRL testing was made possible by sponsorship from RICE Hydro, Inc. utilizing the HP-10 Hydrostatic Test Pump during rocket development. Additional testing is currently underway for the launch of the Mamba rocket where students hope to achieve Mach 3 and 100,000 feet.
Ultimately, the final rocket in the series, yet unnamed, is hoped to penetrate into space, defined by the Kármán line at an altitude of 62 miles above sea level.
These achievements have been possible in large part to RICE Hydro’s sponsorship and utilization of the HP-10 Hydrostatic Test Pump. Before students test a motor, they pressurize the casing to approximately double the pressure expected during a static fire. In the past, students had to test with an inadequate manual pump. This process was dangerous, laborious, and the pump was often unreliable. With RICE’s assistance, CU SRL has been able to consistently pressurize casings to the desired pressure and receive a quick response in identifying potential defects which yield quicker turn around and retesting. Student engineers are able to get immediate feedback on their designs and manufacturing procedures thanks to the reliability of the HP-10.
CU SRL’s accomplishments are impressive and have enabled students to launch careers in the aerospace industry.
