CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval’s first veto has sparked a fight over who, exactly, has the support of the people.
Sandoval today vetoed a bill from Assemblywoman Debbie Smith, D-Sparks, that would have allowed school districts to use debt reserves for school renovation.
Sandoval is counting on that same pot of money to fund school district operating costs.

Sandoval today vetoed a bill from Assemblywoman Debbie Smith, D-Sparks, that would have allowed school districts to use debt reserves for school renovation.

Both the Republican governor and the Democratic Assemblywoman are pointing fingers accusing the other of being irresponsible.

At the request of Spread the Word Nevada, a local children's literacy nonprofit group, Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval flew in from Carson City to Las Vegas on March 31 to read at Cambeiro Elementary School.

This was his last stop after visiting three other schools in Las Vegas, which concluded the governor's reading tour as part of Read Across America and Nevada Reading Month. During his first school visit in Reno on March 2 Sandoval signed a proclamation declaring March 2011 Nevada Reading Month.

CARSON CITY — In politics, it is generally considered bad news if a governor is regularly associated with the terms “hot air” and “hot water.” In Nevada however, these associations, according to Governor Brian Sandoval, are easily acceptable.

Servers at Epsilon, the world's largest permission based email marketing service, have been breached, affecting customers of a wide range of major brands. While mostly only e-mail addresses have been harvested in this hack, it should not be dismissed as a minor threat. Possession of these addresses along with associated business names allows to target customers who expect communication from these companies, making phishing attacks more likely to be successful.

(Press Release) College campuses in Carson City and Las Vegas will host Nevada's portion of a national unity rally on Monday, April 4, the 43rd anniversary that marks the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The northern Nevada event begins at 4:30 p.m. at Rotary Plaza on the campus of Western Nevada College in Carson City.

A Carson City man with two prior convictions of driving under the influence was arrested on suspicion of a third after a citizen advised authorities they had seen an "extremely intoxicated" man get into a car.

Clearview Drive is closed between Edmonds Drive and Line Drive for construction on the next phase of the Nevada Department of Transportation freeway project. Detours are marked. The road is expected to reopen by November of 2011.

RENO – Behind the laptop, beside the cell phone and next to the iPad tablet, somewhere, is a legislator.
“I ask you to please stop looking at your phones,” said Crystal Jackson, a UNR student. “Stop looking as if you’re bored.”
She made the remarks after legislators were more than two hours into listening to students and faculty testify about proposed higher-education cuts at the University of Nevada, Reno on Thursday.

CARSON CITY – Tax revenues, or more specifically the lack thereof, have been topic No. 1 during the 2011 legislative session.
Thus far it’s been mostly talk, with GOP Gov. Brian Sandoval saying no to any new taxes or fees and some Democrat lawmakers saying additional revenues are essential to preserve education and critical social services. Republican lawmakers thus far are standing with the governor.

A proposed bill aimed at protecting school children that would expand the legal means of bullying, including internet harassment and intimidation, has been introduced into the Nevada Legislature. Senate Bill 275 is sponsored by Sen. Sheila Leslie, D-Reno and Sen. David Parks, D-Las Vegas.

A Carson City man faces felony fraud charges after he was arrested for allegedly attempting to cash counterfeit checks at a casino on Wednesday.

Donald Paul Jackson Jr., 27, is being held in Carson City Jail on $27,500 bail. According the arrest report, officers were called to a casino in the 3800 block of Highway 50 East in reference to a suspicious subject attempting to cash counterfeit checks.

The Tahoe Douglas Bomb Squad detonated a live World War II-era hand grenade after a couple discovered the explosive device while going through a friend’s belongings at a Topaz Ranch Estates home on Thursday.

At approximately 7 p.m. the couple drove the hand grenade to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in Minden to turn the device over to authorities, said Douglas County Sheriff's Office Captain John Milby in a news release.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports today that a seventh woman has accused a Carson City probation officer of using his authority and the threat of jail to coerce her into exposing herself for his personal gratification while he was on official duty, according to an amended 25-count criminal complaint filed in Carson City Justice Court. CARSON CITY – An organization that wants to see Yucca Mountain used as a temporary nuclear waste storage site with a research center to explore reprocessing has proposed an amendment to a bill in the Legislature to move its Energy Park idea forward.

CARSON CITY — Bethany Drysdale, who has promoted Nevada's tourism attractions for more than five years for the Nevada Commission on Tourism will head the Public Relations department beginning April 23, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki announced this week.

Drysdale has served as Public Relations specialist for NCOT since October 2005. She succeeds Chris Chrystal, who is retiring as manager April 22 after a 48-year career in news reporting and public relations that included 13 years with the Commission.

A website that dedicates itself to Silver City and proposed gold mining around the historic Lyon County community has been launched.

SilverCityNvBlogspot.com was developed by a group of town residents with the idea of providing a citizen point of view as Comstock Mining, Inc., fueled by record gold prices, looks to change the land-use designation of a parcel it now occupies and has been doing exploratory drilling.

CARSON CITY – A hearing room was packed today with labor and business representatives for a legislative committee’s consideration of a package of bills aimed at curbing the misuse of independent contractors.

From a region with a crystal-blue famed lake to a state of 10,000 of them, non-stop daily service to Minneapolis, Minn., from Reno-Tahoe International Airport will begin July 1, airport officials announced today.

The Carson City Planning Commission meets tonight at 5 p.m. in the Sierra Room at the community center. On the agenda is allowing Silver State Charter School to move to a 6.6 acre parcel between Fairview and Mallory Way. Here is the rest of the agenda. You can also check out the live video.

CARSON CITY – A poll released today shows that most Nevadans hold government workers in high regard.
Nevadans for Nevada, a collective of largely public sector unions, hired Grove Insight to conduct the poll of 500 registered voters.

CARSON CITY – More of the state’s financial data would migrate online with a bill from Assemblyman Marcus Conklin, D-Las Vegas.
He would require the Controller’s office to post the state’s revenues and expenditures online with tables, graphs and explanatory descriptions for each account.

An unemployed Carson City man wanted on felony sexual assault and kidnapping charges was arrested at a motel room in the 200 block of West Caroline on Tuesday morning.

Brandon Hicks, 18, is being held on $200,000 bail. A warrant for his arrest was issued on March 25 in Carson City Justice Court on the alleged felony crimes of first degree kidnapping, battery with intent to commit sexual assault committed by strangulation and sexual assault.
